Just curious what would be decent buys for N172's of HOF'ers in "poor-fair" condtion...if the cards are raw? Assuming that they would only grade a 10. |

Tough to decide...certain HOFers can be had for as little as $200 (McCarthy jumps to mind as he is farily common)...some command huge money like Anson, Kelly, McPhee, Delahanty. $500 is just a very rough average. |

Thanks for the info guys. Who else besides McCarthy would be on the lower end spectrum HOF'ers in the N172 set? I would assume that would be players fairly easily had at $250 or under. |

There are twenty-seven different hall of fame players in the N172 set. Certain hall of famers are more plentiful in the set than others. If you are not looking for a specific pose, but rather, just an example of a particular player, these players seem easier to find: Clarkson, Duffy, Ewing, Keefe, Kelly, McCarthy, O'Rourke, Ward. |

what does a common non altered OJ sell for in pr-fr, VG, and EX? Also is there a list somewhere, or a webpage devoted to OJ's that goes over which poses and players are tough? |

Dylan, There is no better resource for ranking N172 Hall of Famers than Lew Lipset's Encyclopedia. He devotes several pages for his opinions on the difficulty of each HOFer. There have been a few additions to the list since the book was written, but that is a very good place to start. |

Steve....same situation as many others in the past on this board. And yes, IMO it was "outed". While you may very well have found it, chances are there are quite a few here that haven't, but now have. |

most of the time I would not post an auction, but it ends today and thought that you needed help with ending prices for Hall of Famers. |

Jimmy...I specifically asked the question in starting the thread based on this particular auction. So...yes, if a couple less people would have seen it, would have been nice. I understand doing what you did in an attempt to show an auction for the purposes of educating with an ending price...I guess I just wish it would have waited until it ended. |

the ending prices of hall of famers can easily be accessed by checking completed auctions for Old Judges. takes all of five minutes... |

Chris....my point of initially asking was what would be a fair price to pay for an ungraded Old Judge. I have auction results handy...but that doesn't help when the range is so broad for SGC 10-20's and such for HOF'ers when it comes to trying to find what a decent price to pay on a raw card is. |

I have to agree with Steve; while I don't believe it is proper etiquette to post live eBay auctions, I hardly think this was a hidden gem. |

The price of n172 HOFers is also dependent on how easily a player can be found in other sets. There is generally less demand for players found in other sets. For example, n172s of Robinson, Griffith and Beckley are not as expensive as other n172s of equal rarity because those players can be found in multiple twentieth century sets. The same goes for n172 HOFers who are found in N28, N284, N300 and WG2/3. Many HOF collectors do not find it essential to own an n172 Clarkson if they already own an n28 Clarkson. |

I dare say I have given more thought to the subject of "outing" ongoing auctions, on this board, more than almost anyone. There is just no way it will ever be a rule. Personally I wish it were but it just can't be. I hate it when ongoing auctions are outed and I hope to be bidding on the item. The 1910's notebook, with all of the players on it, comes to mind. I was the underbidder in the end and might very well have gotten it had it not been brought up on the board. It was in a weird category too. So, there will be no steadfast rule but I would personally ask folks not to "out" ongoing auctions, as a matter of being considerate to collectors that devote a lot of time (like me) searching ebay. I agree with whomever has said this auction was being seen anyway....and also agree that since it's posted on the board many more people will see it. It's not even debatable.....regards |

As for this whole no outing auctions thing, i wouldnt get upset about it. I mean the OJ for sale had a well written title. Anyone typing in "old Judge" or "n172" or even "baseball card" wouldve found it. Which means pretty much anybody trying to find OJ's is pretty much gonna see it. And being in the tobacco cards category is not really misplaced. I find old judges and t206's and all kinds of pre war tobacco cards in the category all the time, most everyone knows that they are there. Infact many people place them in the pre1930 cat. and the tobacco cat. at the same time to maximize views. Dave, although it is up for debate... a card that has both the acc catalog designation and the set name in the heading is going to reach market value. For the most part i think a valuable item has to be hidden pretty deep too get past many these days. |
