I think they misspelled the second word: it is pronounced like "card" but is actually "crap"

jason, according to the SMR the only cards that appear to be worth anything are in the special catagories like refractors, signed, and crap like that...and thats in psa 10 quality...so, i think we can safely say "no" there really isnt anything worth $5

Not all of the new stuff is "crap." It may not be your collecting tastes, but I wouldn't call it crap.

There are some nice sets with great images and desing, Donruss Classics for example.

The 2001 Bowman Albert Pujols autographed rookie is worth a tad more than $5.00, but it's auto'd so most likely considered "crap." Ah well, to each his own.

I prefer the old stuff to the new shiney cards as well, but I respectivelly disagree with such a blanket statement.

I collect only pre war. But I agree, just because someone is into newer material, that is their choice. To call it crap is somewhat pretentious. It may be crap...but let's have a tiny bit of respect for folks who collect other things than we do. I know a local woman who collects different gum wrappers. She has like 45,000 different ones going way back into the early 20th cen. But I would never call it crap. That would be rather rude. To each their own. I must confess though, gum wrappers don't do much for me. Unless it says Goudey on it...

I actually like the "real" cardboard issues that some of the companies still put out -like Topps Bazooka or Topps 206, Cracker Jack, et cetera....I don't collect any of it, but I do like it.

In defense of Adam's choice of words, I agree that much (most) of what's churned out by the folks at Topps and their soon-to-be-gobbled-up competitors truly is crap. I understand that "crap" is not a particularly sensitive choice of words, but after considering what he is describing, I couldn't think of a better word. It's like stepping in a pile of doggie doo and calling it "canine excrement." It's still crap.

We like what we like.

I still think it's fun to rip open packs, no matter what's inside. I don't know about you guys, but I started collecting baseball cards by opening packs.

In terms of why people grade them, I guess some people just like consistency, protection, whatever. I've got modern HOFers in slabs, probably paid more for the grading than the card. That's okay with me.

I cannot believe I have to explain the joke but here goes:

I am not denigrating the collecting habits of others. We (collectively) call it "shiny crap" in literally dozens of threads on this board (run a search for "shiny crap" if you don't believe me). I thought it was very funny that someone at SGC (they all read this board) obviously was playing on the colloquialism we use on this board by titling the special on new cards as a special for "shiny cards".

Hey, I think the shiny stuff is crap...I just wanted to point out that the new stuff isn't all "Shiny stuff". IMO baseball cards just don't look, feel, smell right if they have a UV coating...they are not what I grew up with....you can't even look at a stack of shiny stuff easily as they all stick together and you might accidentally get a fingerprint on one.

In defense of shiny crap: I don't much like the new cards but there are a number of vintage sets that if they were not vintage would be considered "crap" (at least by me). I'm not knowlegable enough about the sets to specify but some of those strip sets are pretty ugly looking.

That being said, I have no problem w/others calling the shiny stuff "crap". Some folks are just too sensitive.

The RC's of Pujols that aren't autod are worth more then a 5 dollar holder as well. live and let live, but i think we can all agree vintage cards hold much more fascination then their modern day counterparts.

You think touching the shiny crap is bad, don't let it get cold.

About 10 years ago, I loaded up a bunch of shiny crap, put it into my trunk and was taking it to a flea market to see if I could sell it. Well, on the way there, someone (I don't know who because they never caught them) ran a red light and totaled my car. I was put into an ambulance and taken to the hospital while my car was hauled to a police impound lot.

This happened in daylight during February and it wasn't that cold (in the 40's?). Overnight, the temp dropped into the 20's. The next day, when I went to look at my car and retrieve whatever I could, I opened the trunk and saw the shiny crap.

The UV coating had cracked on some of the cards and most of the rest were really curled up. So, if you collect this stuff, make sure the cards dont' get exposed to temps below freezing.

I have a nice small (yet growing) collection of vintage cards but like some of the "shiny crap." To be specific, I collect Albert Pujols cards that have the vintage look to them. Its nice how Topps has sets like Topps Heritage, Bowman Heritage, Allen & Ginter, and Turkey Red. Their T206 and T205 sets they released a couple years ago did well. However, I regard 100% of the new stuff as grossly overpriced. I don't spend more than $5-$10 bucks for some of these Pujols cards but for people to care that a card is serial numbered, or some gold refractor and crap like that is ludicrous. I also think that the cards that should get graded are the vintage cards. Its pretty obvious that the new stuff is mint, but to see such a difference between an 8, 9, or 10 graded shiny card is crazy. But, if there's a market for it, why not do it...I'll stick with the good stuff.
