O/T -need a little regional help- Milwaukee Sausage

Hey Folks,
I know.....2 O/T's in one day....I will reprimand myself soon
I am trying to find out a little bit about a newer card than I would generally know about for a friend of mine. It is a Milwaukee Sausage card. Don't even know who the player is. I am told they are sort of like the HiGrade Sausage or Henry Sausage (which I still know nothing about). Has anyone ever seen these? Value? etc.......thanks much

I know a good bit about cards from the area (only b/c of the braves history there...) are you talking about a player card or a card of the actual sausage???? Like the one that runs the race......

They're from 1963, and i think the ACC on them is f-180 (though i might not be right on that - i don't have the catalogue or anything so that is totally from memory). They depict Seattle Rainiers players and are FREAKIN HARD to find... I had one many years ago...don't know where it is.

Both Bob Reed and Charles Kapner will probably know what you're looking for...

Leon, Beckett Vintage Sports Collectibles did a small article on these but I don't remember which issue and my copies are still packed away somewhere or I would have included a copy of the article. It is a Seattle regional issue put out by Milwaukee Sausage Company of Seattle in 1963 on the backs of of their packages very similar to the Peters Meats Minnesota Twins issue. BVSC gave the checklist (11 cards in the set) and values ($200 for NM & $80 for EX), however it is an extremely tough set and you know what that means when you are talking values - worth what someone is willing to pay. Had emails offering twice book for the one that was pictured. Hope this helps.

I'm definitely no expert when it comes to these, but I found the post interesting so I looked up a little info. (Nothing earth shattering)

1963 Milwaukee Sausage Seattle Rainiers

ACC: F180

11 cards known

Blue tinted with red and yellow

Checklist (From 2005 SCD Catalog, page 1514):

Hall
Harrell
Jernigan
McLeod
Mel Parnell (The only player of note in the set)
Singleton
Skeen
Smith
Smith
Spanswick
Spencer

Commons: 90 VG to 300 NM (from 2005 SCD)

Parnell: 105 VG to 350 NM (from 2005 SCD)

For starters Ted and Wayne areright about these being tough to find. I've seen a couple Henry Houses and Hygrades in my time, but I don't recall the last time I saw a Milwaukee Sausage. The only one I could find in any recent auction was the June 1997 REA auction catalog lot# 254. Of course this is ONLY accounting for REA. That lot featured Bill MacLeod VG/VG-EX along with two Henry Houses. The opening bid for that lot in '97 was $300. They're pretty tough and I'd think someone would be hard pressed to find a decent example on Ebay or anywhere else for much less than that nowadays. These are on a lot of PCL & Type collector's wantlists. Perhaps one of the board PCL experts will chime in with some info?

Henry House's and Hygrades look similer. They are both red and white and are approximately the same size with rounded corners. They are also both very difficult to find as well. I believe Mark Macrae wrote an article about HyGrades for VCBC. I can't recall which issue.

P.S.: A question for the PCL/Regional experts

There are 12 in the set and PURETA is a MEAT sponcer..

Yes... they are almost as impossible!!! I only need several more to complete the set but in 4 years I have only seen them 2 times on ebay... The PCL sellers of the world have NEDVER had any for sale....

Back in 1995 REA auctioned off what was then the only known complete set of Milwaukee Sausages. 10 of the 11 cards were listed as being in NrMt to Nr/Mt-Mt condition with no stains on them of any kind. It was theorized then that these ten never made into the finished product, thus accounting for their pristine condition. The 11th card was Vg-Ex. The opening bid for that set (Lot # 773) was $2000. I don't know what the final price was, but I'd love to see what that set would go for now.


Well, that'll be enough of this Sausage Fest for me, I'm off to bed.
