Red Border Colgans or Tin Tops ?

Hey, i've been into Colgans latley and have a question. Which are more rare red bordered colgans or tin tops ? Obviously the red borders look much better but which one is more rare ? Oldcardboard lists them as being worth the same price( both worth twice the amount of a normal Colgans). So what are everybodies takes on them here which do you think are the more rare of the two....E270-1s or E270-2s ?

I think red borders are slightly easier than tin tops. Over the years I've had probably 8-10 red borders and only 2-3 tin tops. They are both very, very tough though.

I concur with Andy regarding the relative scarcity of the tin tops and red borders. I have confirmed this with Larry Fritsch, one of the experts on Colgan's. To add to your question, I have always wondered how scarce the so-called proofs are compared to the red-borders and the tin tops.

I had about 12 Tin Tops and 6 Red Borders. Of course, I'd only get red borders in which the border completely encircled the picture.

So yes, if you take any red border that comes along, they may be a bit eassier than the Tin Tops. High grade red borders sell for more than high grade tin tops, though (not of course talking about a Jackson or a Johnson--yes, there is a tin top Johnson!). Oh yeah--my 2006 guide hasn't come yet--but there better not be an E254 Jackson listed, or an E254 Cobb, name on uniform...


This is the only E254 Cobb...I have only one Colgans left, so don't everyone ask if I want to sell that one..it's a Wagner.
