I was wondering if anyone who collects or specializes in these cards could give me some input on what they think the order of rarity is on the known 1915 1916 M101-5/M101-4 style cards with advertising backs (ie. "Herpolsheimer", "Standard Biscuit", etc.). I would think the blank backs are the most common from what Ive seen. But would the "Sporting News" back be next? Or are some others just as common as the SN back? I was mainly interested in the back variations, and not much in the year. I know a few of the backs are found in both years. Here is a list (below) of the different backs I know of from what I can find (19 different including blank back). If anyone knows of others (Leon |

Frank--I collect these and would divide the backs into four scarcity categories(my opinion as to scarcity--others may disagree): |

Those are them, ya'll. I have the completed "backs" set so if you need scans let me know. I agree with Jay on the scarcity but would throw 2 of the 3 types of Gimbels print variations into the very scarce arena...(the small print and large block variety)..the large print variety of Gimbels are the easier of the 3...in my opinion.......best regards |

Jay & Leon, Thanks for the great info, its exactly what I was looking for. I knew roughly where most of the more common backs stood, but didnt know much about which ones were the most rare, except the Holmes to Homes. Thanks agian, I have one last question, I enclosed a scan of a Gimbels card back. Which back variation would this Gimbels back be called, in relation to the other 2 Gimbels variations. Can you describe the differences in the 3. |

Frank--That is the most common version. There is another version where the letters are the same size but straight up and down, not leaning. The third variation has smaller letters that are also straight up and down. |

I'm sure I haven't been collecting these as long or as hard as Leon and Jay, but I have found that the Tribune and Globe backs are noticeably more available than the others Jay has listed as tier 2 difficulty. They're often not advertised correctly, so maybe some searches don't pick 'em up, but I try and look at all of m101-4s and 5s on the odd chance somebody messed up (picked up a nice morehouse that way for 12 bucks). |

Very esoteric but still they are variations...I would like to hear from anyone that has any different Gimbels than the one Frank pictured and/or any other backs too...I saw "Noon Day Cafeteria" listed once but my sources and footwork have never paid off......best regards |

Both Jesse and George Stovall are my mother-in-laws uncles their younger brother Samuel was her father. Do you know if Jesse ever had a card? Or would you be willing to scan and send a copy of George's to me to send to her. Thanks John |

According to our player data base, Jesse Stovall can be found in all three years (1909-11) Obaks and W600 Sporting Life premiums. |
