Our 5 cats. All rescues. Stormy and Trixie are from the animal shelter. Lightning we brought in from outside. Merry and Pippin (after Meriadock Brandybuck and Peregrine Took, Merry and Pip, from The Lord of the Rings) were found as newborn kittens in an abandoned house, abandoned by the mother too. They're like children, keeping us on our toes.

I had posted on this thread previously, but last February I lost my Great Pyrenees-Akbash mix to cancer. I still had two other dogs, but missed having a Great Pyrenees. A few weeks ago I came across a Facebook post from a local rescue about a Pyrenees they had up for adoption. The post was over 2 months old, so I messaged them to ask if the dog was still available. He was but he was being fostered in Buffalo, NY. Apparently, it is easier to adopt Pyrenees in the Northeast, since most folks down this way only want them to be livestock guardian dogs.

My wife and I were heading to Ohio on vacation, but instead of accompanying her to the Glass Gathering at the West Virginia Museum of American Glass as we originally planned, I took a trip up to Buffalo to adopt this handsome fellow:

This is Bo, adopted at 12 weeks old through Wolf Trap Animal Rescue (WTAR) in Merrifield, VA. If you live in the DC/MD/VA area and are looking for a dog or cat, please consider WTAR. It is a great organization that saves many animals that would otherwise be euthanized.

This is Roxie. She's a 13 or 14-year-old Yorkie mix - a sweet old lady dog. My family adopted her three and a half years ago - my dad didn't want a dog but my sister yearned for one and in the end she won out. Now we all love her - my dad not the least.

The first picture of her is one my sister took just a couple days ago - the second is from a few years ago.

I'm very sad to report that Cowboy (2004?-16 June 2025 R.I.P.) is no more. The WOMAN and I bid him a tearful farewell yesterday afternoon as he embarked on his journey across the Rainbow Bridge:

May another one of our longtime companions rest in peace.

Here are some shots from happier times:

The wife and I took a year-long hiatus from owning another pet after our beloved Tater passed away in January, '24. Just after New Year's 2025, we rescued this guy after he was pulled from a high-kill shelter in Newark, NJ. His name is Tank, and he's every bit like that moniker. He's also a total sweetheart.

Cowboy had been a member of our family for nearly seventeen years and was approaching 21 years of age (we think). We knew he was slowing down and had taken him to the vet in February where the diagnosis was "old cat" with slowing kidney function. He'd been keeping to his normal routines though and seemed to be enjoying life but at a slower pace.

But he stopped eating and grooming himself over the weekend and was clearly in pain. The WOMAN and I took turns staying up with him all night on the front porch where he loved to be Sunday evening through Monday morning. The vet told us on Monday that one of his internal organs had shut down. We could learn specifically what had gone very wrong with a battery of tests but there was no hope for any kind of recovery. Just more pain and misery until the end.

So I had to make that toughest of all calls. But what's really savage in these situations is that this little creature who's completely devoted to you trusts you implicitly to do what's best for him and thus make everything right. Yet in the end there's nothing you can do but make the god decision and stay there with him as he departs this mortal coil. It's absolutely devastating.

A few more pics from better days:
