Default 1934 Lou Gehrig Butterfinger With Red Overprint

We have had discussions on these in the past. Being on thicker stock, instead of the thin, brittle pulp stock of the premiums, that these red over prints were meant to be for in-store display. Thus quite rare. This Lou Gehrig version, same image as the usual premium, looks like real in game action. Does anyone know what stadium? This is probably my favorite image of the southpaw first baseman of them all.

I don't know the answer but is that yours, James? You don't have a sharper image do you?

I think I have seen a Gehrig premium like that before but I am always at least very cautious on stamped items. If the one you have there, looked like that in a nice close up, I would have reservations about the stamp. Here is a close up pic of one I have (not Gehrig)....
I will go out on a limb and say that stadium has been figured out before. It's a classic pose.

Completely agree. These are just images I found on Google, so even larger, it looks blown up, pixelated. I like this photo of Lou Gehrig, and I haven't seen it anywhere else except these premiums. I'm sure someone has figured out the stadium.

You might have better luck posting the regular version without the ad. It shows the outfield and ads better.

I remember this came up about 5 years ago. Here is what member Doug Goodman said in that thread.

'It's not heaven, it's Iowa. I think the big clue is on the scoreboard, and I’ll bet the picture was taken at a college or minor league park in Iowa during one of the Yankees' many barnstorming tours in the '20s or early '30s.

"The Peach" and tagline "Last Word in Sports" on the scoreboard probably refer to the Des Moines Register newspaper, which for many years printed it’s sports section on peach-colored paper. The Sunday edition was known as “The Big Peach.” Garner “Sec” Taylor was the Register’s sports editor for 51 years, from 1914-1965; and Des Moine’s Principal Park, formerly known as Sec Taylor Stadium, is the home of today’s Pacific Coast League Iowa Cubs.

Babe and Lou did barnstorm Des Moines, Oct. 18, 1927 and Oct. 29, 1928"

Thanks Leon and Phil! That nails it, close enough. As I said, I really think it's my favorite Lou Gehrig photo. Now I need to bite the bullet and get one!

The Chicago Evening American also had a Peach edition, so I wonder if this could be taken at Comiskey Park.

I believe it is also Comiskey Park. Might even be mid-late 1920s the image was taken...even though it's a 1934 product. Matches the billboard ads. Minus the top clock which could of been added/removed at some point.

(Not mine pics, for reference).. edit: thanks Leon for the help uploading the photo!

Based on more research, I believe the Gehrig photo was taken 1925 at Comiskey Park. Which is Gehrig rookie year..?

The clock above the "The Peach" ad in the Gehrig photo is technically there, but I didn't notice before it's cut off by the thick trim boarder outline of the item.

1925 Ike Davis (last year in majors), shows ads matching Gehrig & the Pennock photo above

Opening Day April 13, 1926 Browns vs. White Sox at Comiskey Park. The Peach, "Last Word" in Sports and few others billboard ads changed out.

This is crazy! I never knew Comiskey ever looked like this. Amazing to me.

My favorite pre-war photos are the ones with signage. Don't get me wrong. I think images of players are great. However, there's something about the ads that really brings the picture to life for me.
