Name the five #1 overall draft picks that went on to win Rookie of the Year.

Bryce Harper and Ken Griffey Jr

Yes! Bryce Harper won ROY in 2012.
I believe Ken Griffey Jr. finished 3rd in ROY voting behind Gregg Olson and Tom Gordon. |

Alex Rodriguez?

ARod is a fine guess, as he was drafted #1 overall in the '93 draft, but he exceeded his rookie limit during '95 when he only had 149 Played Appearances and didn't garner any ROY votes. He would have won it the next year though, when he finished 2nd in MVP

Darryl Strawberry?

Correct! Strawberry was the #1 draft pick out of Crenshaw High School in LA in 1980 and won ROY 3 years later.

Dwight Gooden and Derek Jeter

Good NY guesses, but Gooden was drafted 3rd overall and Jeter 6th.

Correct, Paul Skenes is the most recent answer, having been drafted #1 overall in 2023 and then winning ROY the following year.
A fine guess, as Cole was drafted #1 overall, but he didn't get any ROY votes. Two more to go, and they are both position players, although only one of them was much of a fielder. Last edited by cgjackson222; Yesterday at 10:03 AM. |

I believe Bob Horner is one (possibly the non-fielder mentioned).

This might be my third strike, Carlos Correa.

Frank Thomas is not one of them.
Bob Horner is correct. Horner was drafted #1 out of Arizona State in '78 and immediately entered the Majors where he won ROY at age 20. Yes, Carlos Correa was drafted #1 overall out of Puerto Rico in 2012 and won ROY 3 years later also at age 20. Well done everyone! You got all 5: Bryce Harper, Darryl Strawberry, Paul Skenes, Bob Horner and Carlos Correa |
