I can't make this stuff up. I sent in a T201 Double Folder Lajoie to SGC to get graded. Never in a million years would I think that SGC would actually take this card and FOLD IT IN HALF AND SHOVE IT IN A SLAB. I am sure they have graded hundreds, if not thousands, of T201s.
They destroyed my card. I would like to be reimbursed for the damage they caused by sheer incompetence. Instead they offered me a $30 credit towards a future grading. No thanks.... I will pass They graded the folded card a 1.5 and when I sent it back they still graded it a 1.5 so I guess folded=unfolded. Last edited by ajg; 04-29-2025 at 07:24 PM. Reason: photos |

Did they really fold it though? Or did you just unfold it?

The T201's were the 1st vintage set I bought. Was in the early '80's at a coin shop.
I never like the Lajoie image, & think the folded image looks better. I never saw the folded image before, since every T201 I've ever seen was unfolded. SGC screwed up, but fixed it in the end, with out destroying the card as Lorewalker stated. No harm, no foul |

I've seen raw T201s for sale at shows that were folded and in regular top loaders. It does surprise me when I see them like that since you can't see the entire card and it's condition.

It looks like a beat up card to begin with. How did they destroy it? Maybe they made a mistake. I think it looks cool. How much do you want for it? |

Count me as also confused. How is the card destroyed?? It's meant to be folded.

Agree Leon. I should have kept the card encapsulated as it was. A true one of one. I just want to understand SGC's thought process when handling, grading and finally folding the card. I would assume there is a standard holder for T201 and the original holder ain't it.

The Lajoie is my favorite card in the set. (I know that adds nothing to this thread.)

How much money do you believe they should pay you for this totally real damage and destruction? $30 cash instead of credit? More?

.....can you request cards be slabbed this way? Sometimes I want the guy who is on the back of the slab when displayed showing the front only.

I don’t see any “destruction” of the card here unless the card was originally unfolded. You can argue the value is diminished when the star player is completely obscured. I could understand that discussion. I would have just demanded a free reholder, if I also received the credit on top it would have been a nice bonus for my troubles.

I can honestly say that I have never owned a T201 and probably never will.

Not sure that I would even want one given the issues with slabbing it.

A couple of years ago, I did just that. I made the request to fold and encapsulate the Ty Cobb card since his entire body would then be visible along with his stats alone on back. I thought this would present him better than just the half Cobb upside down that normally occurs. But they wouldn't do it then. I am beginning to wonder if they would do it now?

I picked this up on fleabay over a decade ago. PSA slabbed a folded T201. When I saw it, I had to have it because I thought it was just too funny. The cert number and grade have been obscured because my thought was that PSA might consider de-certing the card if they knew which one it was.
Edited to add - one thing folding the card could do is hide those hinge issues on the side of the cards. If you collect T201s, then you know what I mean. Not sure how slabbing a card this way would damage it. Also read some collectors don't like T201s. Something to consider for T201 is that it's only 50 cards with none difficult to find. That's only 50 cards to complete a complete T-card set. If you collect sets for each decade, then this is an economical set that can be put together for that decade. t201benderslaberror.jpg . . . . .
