Default T216 wagner question

I was looking on eBay and saw a t216 kotton honus wagner and wondered why he was on a tobacco card if he was so opposed to his image being related to cigarettes/tobacco products? Thanks for any information this board might have

Assuming the cards were a fully legal and legitimate set, at the time it was privacy laws in primarily New York that forced the American Lithographic linked printers to get approval from subject, not federal law. Subjects signed contracts that didn’t mention tobacco at all, so some who did may well not have even known that was one of the things their image was going to be used for.

I think Greg is probably right...I doubt seriously Honus knew his "likeness" was being used by Kotton Tobacco...here is the a scan of the only Kotton I had along with a few others...Jerry

We know Honus loved his "wad of chewbacca" (as was so humorously phrased by his granddaughter).

An old Dodger I was friends with befriended Honus when the latter was coaching the Pirates in the 1930's. I was told that Honus loved his chaw, but would always prefer to go under the stands or into the dugout when partaking in a clump of the stuff because he didn't want to be a bad influence to any kids who might see.

I agree that Wags probably didn't know People's Tobacco was using his likeness.

I love those thin Kotton backs.. They are so difficult to find in any kind of condition above poor... I need to re-scan this one..

They are incredibly thin. I like good scans of terrible condition cards, and my Evers was a tough one to scan, but is a Kotton that perfectly fits my evil scanning scheme.
