Hello everyone! New member here!
- I live in Pasadena, CA and just got into collecting pre-war 9 months ago.
- Have collected since 1975.
- US Navy Veteran, married with four kids and a lovable cat that we rescued from the streets!
- Focus in the past has been 1955 Topps through 1980 Topps, with a sprinkling of modern RCs.
- Pre-war focus is T205, T206, 1909 W555, 1915 Cracker Jacks, and M101-4/5 rare backs. I'm an active buyer! Not much of a seller.
- I used to live on the east coast, so I'm acquainted with the Chantilly, VA, Philly, and White Plains, NY cards shows.
- Interesting fact: I collected 1980 Topps back in the day, and still have six Henderson RCs that I pulled out of packs, the best being a PSA 8.5 and the others in the PSA 6 range. They were played with! LoL
- Biggest regret: Selling my 1969 Reggie Jackson RC PSA 9 mint for $1,000 back in 2012. Wish I had that one back!

If anyone in the Pasadena area would like to meet on a Saturday morning at 9am or so over coffee (at a local cafe) and talk about old cards, I'd like to start a group! Please pm me!

Cheers!
Greg

Thanks everyone! Since I am new to collecting pre-war, my collection is not as amazing as what you have. I do have several HOF (Aaron, Berra, Banks) 1955 Bowmans (I love those tv set cards) that are NM or better, and numerous HOF (Mantle, Mays, etc) from the 1950s and 1960s, but my pre-war collection has just started. I will share some pics when I get a chance, and thanks again for the great reception. I have really enjoyed readings all these threads!
Cheers,
Greg

Some sets I'm working on. Actually, my wife is collecting the 1915 Cracker Jacks. She got me into pre-war when we went to a show and said she liked the red color on the CJs. Now we have around 8 of them!

Welcome Greg!

I'm in North Hollywood, but 9 am is way too early for me, I need my beauty rest.

Hahaha. Doug, have you ever been to Lancers on Victory Blvd? The back area has large booths that seat five people. Great food too and decent price! Jay Miller said he might be interested, but he too thinks 9am is too early. So perhaps 11am for anyone interested?

Default Welcome aboard...

...I just joined today too and posted under the vintage baseball and postcard thread. But might as well share here that I'm on a desperate search for Billy Edwards and Willie Harradon N43's (1889 Allen & Ginter Champions).

I'm totally showing my hand here, as I REALLY want to find these cards. I've been after them for too long. So whomever has them, will have me over a barrel. I'm open to purchase or trade, so if anyone has one of them, please let me know and I'll share what I have to offer. Thanks, I'm gonna need help to get along the finish line on my N43 collection.

As I'm discovering with rare vintage, us buyers / collectors are all "over the barrel."

478. “Loose lips sink flips.”
The time honored maxim that it is best not to be too forthcoming in letting people know what hard-to-find cards you’re actively pursuing, because anyone having one of those cards will know they now have you over a barrel.

Yeah, I hear ya JollyEm, but I'm a newbie here. And I feel it'd be disrespectful to just roll up and play it cool, when it wouldn't be the truth. I want to build connections here, so I'm starting with the truth...I want those 2 cards, and will pay fair value for them. The extra expense of my honesty is worth the trust it'll buy : )

No, no, no!!! You're taking it wrong. My apologies. It's not a shot at you at all, it's just an old 'Collectorism' that fits this scenario (because of the 'over a barrel' reference). That's all.

'Collectorisms' are sort of a 'new dictionary' of collecting words, phrases, etc., that I put together periodically.

I drove past Lancers a couple days ago on my way to an art showing at the Gen Autry Museum.

I could make 11 work...

Hey JollyElm, I didn't take it as an insult. It's wise advice! I was just saying that in this particular situation, I'm letting wisdom get trumped by my desire to finally track down these 2 cards.

Thanks for responding at all : )
