This is a recent pickup from Heritage. Aside from it being a Script Seties HOFer, I was intrigued by the cropped image. I’ve seen the Brooklyn minis, but I’ve never seen another player / card that is cropped square like Smiling Micky here… does anyone have or know of any other players or poses like this?

Yes, an interesting card. I've previously theorized that the original image captured on glass plate negative was landscape and Goodwin chose to make a card in portrait. That pose of Welch is catalogued in cabinet form, but I haven't been able to study it. Would be interesting to see if the cabinet is portrait or landscape.
The Brooklyn minis do give a similar but different appearance for reasons explored in the book. There are some other cards in which the cabinets the cards are based on are trimmed or covered in a fashion that leaves larger "white" areas. Cards such as McGunnigle and every Browns Champ and Gypsy Queen. There are also quite a few vignette portraits that make a transition to a white background . . . portraits such as Anson, Honest John Kelly, and Phenomenal Smith (I'm sure there are others). Nice card of Smiling Mickey.

It intrigues me that the old Judge logo is outside of the image (similar to the Browns Champions)… I can’t find an example of another card that has this. The minis still have the logo in the image.

Jay, what a great cabinet !!
So, it was shot in portrait after all, the ~ 4x6 photo doesn't translate well to a cigarette card with a narrower aspect ratio. This issue didn't impact all the other N172s, Goodwin was able to crop on the sides without hitting the player's body, not the case on this pose of Mr. Welch. Again, what a great looking cabinet Jay !
