Default Was this '54 Topps Mays recolored? Ebay/CSG says it was

I attempted to buy a '54 Topps Willie Mays card off ebay.

It was sent to CSG for authentication, but failed. It was deemed "recolored" according to the seller.

The seller has offered to sell to me for $100 less than I originally paid, and says he/she has "gone over it several times with a 10 power mag glass" and can't find any evidence of tampering.

The seller has 100% positive feedback and over 2,000 feedbacks.

The seller says if I don't like it, I can return for a refund.

Thoughts on how best to determine if its been recolored?

Once you have it in hand, can use a UV/Blue light to go over the card and any added color areas should stand out. Could ask the seller to do that too, if they have one.

The card has writing on the back, as well, so it's not like it's completely original anyway. If you like the price at $100 off, I'd say go for it and enjoy...especially if he's giving you the option to return it.

Great advice, William/CardPadre.

Since the seller failed to disclose the writing on the back, I am wondering why it didn't fail the authentication because of that.

I think I may stay on the sidelines.

Not sure about the card but I have found the 100% feedback on thousands of reviews to be unreliable on eBay. I see this regularly with sellers who charge absurd predatory buy-it now-prices and/or call raw cards NMT-MT that are actually in VG-EX condition.

In this case ask yourself if you will be ok if you find out the card is in fact recolored. If so, then buy the card. If not, then don’t. In other words don’t expect the send it back option is one that you will want to utilize.

I have been looking at 54T Jackie Robinson cards, and I see that several of them are graded as authentic/altered because of recoloring. Does anyone have any information about how and where these cards are recolored? One of the sellers thought the recoloring might have been on the black under the bill of Jackie's cap.
