I own a few N162s (mostly baseball) and I was looking at them tonight and noticed something that I haven't noticed before. On the back of the bottom of the cards, both have "GOODWIN & CO." on one line then "NEW YORK." on the second line, then I noticed that a couple of the cards had a third line with "GEO S. HARRIS & SONS, LITH PHILA". Most of the cards (some graded some not) did not have the third line.
I know this isn't significant and it doesn't mean much. If you have any N162s, can you answer with how many total and how many have the third line of text. I have (12) N162 cards. Only two have the third line. N162 backs.jpg

Hi Fred,
I have owned three N162s (I have now sold them)–one had the third line and two did not. I wondered about this at one point but forgot about it.

My boxing N162's are similar. I have one card with the extra line, and two that do not. Maybe there were two different printers. The next logical question to ask is can you get the same card with different backs?

David,
That's a very logical question. Yes, I have (2) Keefe's. One with and one without the third line.

So now all those that want a "master set" must have both backs. Yikes!

I believe Henry Moses has written about this in the past but I could be mistaken. Similar to N184 where they can be found with and without advertiser backs. I believe Henry has completed a master set in N184, don't believe he has pursued N162 in the same fashion. Chime in Henry . . .

A thread on this topic (posted Aug 2008) did a survey of TM vs No-TM. Refer to..... https://www.net54baseball.com/showth...highlight=n162
The results of this random survey indicates that the No-TM cards are considerably more available than the TM cards. ![]() The Geo. S Harris Trademark is evident on 24 of the cards in my current 50-card set. Over the past 30+ years, I have had enough N162 cards to complete 3 sets (and a near 4th). Of which, one included all 50 subjects with the Harris Trademark. ![]() TED Z T206 Reference . Last edited by tedzan; 11-30-2021 at 03:47 PM. Reason: Added information. |

Ted,
That was a few years back. Thank you for that link. Your mind is sharp as a tack! Going forward, IF I continue to pick up N162s, then I'll have a preference for the cards that have the printers line on it. I don't think there's a premium on this because none of the item descriptions I've seen for N162s appears to indicate the presence of the third line.

Hey Fred, ![]() ![]() Seriously speaking....There isn't any premium for the TM cards that I know of. However, 30 years ago when I was collecting N162 cards, I put together a near complete set without the TM's. I started a 2nd set of N162's with the TM's. After a year (or 2) I managed to find just 24 of them, and my patience faded out, so I never completed it. Perhaps, they should have a premium, because they are really tough to find. ![]() ![]() Just between the 19th century collectors, now we know something to look for in N162s. It just might become all the collecting rage to complete a trade marked N162 set. Even the non-baseball N162s are getting a bit crazy in price. Throw it in a slab with a numeric grade and the thought of completing a set would require I start a new occupation, like robbing banks.

It’s been a while since I collected the set, but if I remember correctly there were two separate printings and that is what is reflected. If you look at the cards there are also differences in front color brightness between the two printings.

I curse you for this info Fred! Now my complete set is no longer finished. Oddly, all but one of mine had the 3rd line. Sometimes a blind dog gets lucky.
