Are there cards still being added to the checklist ?
Pulled a card from my collection and can't find it listed anywhere online, no sales, , no other pictures valuable ? N172 Elmer Smith - Cincinnati card I have has the player standing to the left of the plate elbows down - holding ball I see other cards of this player standing in the plate area with elbows up, any info would be helpful |

Do you have the OJ book? Is it not in there? There are still new discoveries, but I'm guessing you have 1 of the 5 poses pictured in their book. Post a pic and you'll get an answer. If you did find a 6th pose, then it would sell at a premium.

From your description of the card - elbows down, holding the ball - it sounds like you have card 423-2. A picture would confirm it. The Goodwin book by Jay, Joe G., and Richard Masson is invaluable.

You have pose 1. He's holding a bat, with the ball hanging over the plate. Nice card.

Todd, in the book that I'm looking at, the one Dave referenced above, they have another example pictured with a similar photo to your card.
I collect player pose runs and know that it can take many years to track down a specific pose of a player. That's why I say "nice card". Although the image is faded, it would clearly be a tough card to track down. Rob

The pop reports can't help with poses. Only recently has SGC been adding the pose number to the flips. PSA never has and they still might not be adding it to the flips therefore if there's a player in a registry, you'll never know what pose it is or what the distribution of poses is for that player. Even if they started putting the poses into the flip and registry information they couldn't go back and determine what the previous player poses were because I'm going to guess the TPGs don't do the smart thing and SCAN the cards they're grading. Wouldn't that make sense for the TPGs to do things like this for really expensive cards or relatively scarce cards, or for all cards that they slab, for that matter.

Here's Elmer in pose 423-3 in a PSA slab. Note, no pose number. The whited out areas are the bar code and cert number.
Did you know there are 36 different poses (published in the OJ Bible) that account for 7 players with the last name of Smith? For Elmer, there are 5 different poses. How many Phenomenal Smiths are in the PSA and/or SGC registries? What that population report number will not tell you is how many Phenomenal Smith PORTRAIT cards have been graded. My guess is that the Smith Portrait is probably a lot tougher to find than any of the other basic poses. Not only that, there's just ONE Smith card that has the word Phenomenal on it (422-1). Just how accurate are those pop reports if there is "0" Elmer Smith cards, yet below is a PSA graded example. Smith 423-3.jpg

Cardtarget lists a sale of an Elmer Smith looking at approaching ball but there's no picture or scan.
It shows a sale of a PSA 5mk on Feb 6 2015 maybe it's listed in VCP if someone that has a subscription can check. |

Final post on Elmer Smith OJs (hopefully)
Below is the run of Elmer Smith OJs with the pose numbers. This picture was taken from the OJ Bible (The Photographic Baseball Cards of Goodwin & Company 1886-1890) that was written by a few board members. This is arguably one of the best books written on a card series ever published. Joe, Richard and Jay - hope you don't mind me taking the picture and putting it in this thread. If you like OJs, then this is a MUST have book. This OJ Bible has so much information about the OJ series. Each subject has the known poses along with player bios and known team variations for each pose. Smith Elmer_run_bible.jpg

I signed up for a 1 month subscription to VCP. Really difficult to navigate, if anyone has any tips would appreciate it. Thanks Joe. Wanted to use it for Old Judge N172.
