Yes great set. The best thing about the set is that is the year my Phillies won the World Series.

The very last set I bought as a kid. I wish I'd been more condition conscious. So many 7-8 Hendersons....

But I always wondered why the highlights on back of each card were from the 1978 season instead of the 1979 season.
This was the one year when I went crazy buying packs and cellos etc.. At the end of the season I bought 4 vending boxes. Still, couldn't make a complete set. Ended up with 12 Rickey Henderson rookie cards. All badly off center. |

I liked that one too, especially after the yawner that was 1979 Topps.

Love this set, however I always hated how Topps put eyeliner and what not on Winfield's face. Looks like they gave Gaylord and Eck a similar but less noticeable treatment. I'm sure there's others. Why?

I am starting my search for the yellow letter variations now. It seems that there are more than just 3 that are documented.

You never forget your first - 1980 Topps Baseball! (Football and Hockey - hello Gretzky). Ricky to Phil Simms to the Great One. So many packs, so much fun!

My favorite "modern" set. I was seven (almost eight) when Topps released it. It was the year when I began to really collect baseball cards.

Well, this thread made me go dig through my 1980 Topps cards...and you're right, this really is a good set. The pictures and design are great.
Speaking of great pictures, as I was going through the cards, I stopped to appreciate the Tim Foli card. Who is Tim Foli you ask? I have no idea. But take a look at this...between Tim's expression, the action, Youngblood's awkward arm angle in the slide (???), Tim's autograph penmanship, and those old time Pirate uniforms, this makes for a GREAT card: Foli.jpg |

Every time I see a thread like this it makes me think I could be happy only collecting cards from this decade. I don't really consider myself an error/variation collector, but I gravitate toward that with cards from the 80s. There's just so much affordable, neat stuff out there from this decade of my youth. Somehow, I currently don't own any '80 Topps. Not sure how, but I have a feeling I'll correct that.

Every time I see a thread like this.....it makes me want to put the set together. I've got a bunch of these laying around, may just need to take the plunge.
As a teenager, my collecting took a nosedive in 1980 after taking off in '77, gaining momentum in '78 and winding down in '79. Somehow though I've got a stash of 1980s. Those really are some nice photos. And I like the All-Star banner.

Turned 8 in July 1980. My grandfather had been a semi pro ball player in the early 1930’s and really turned me onto collecting baseball cards. Once a week my mom would go over to my grandparents house and he would pick me up from school and go to Thrifty’s for an ice cream cone and a few packs of cards. I was hooked. It didn’t hurt that I lived in Los Angeles and Fernando mania was in full effect the next season. I think at one point I had 7 Henderson’s, of course none in great shape because I was 8 and my brother was 5. I still have two of them and lucked into a vending box about ten years ago for $125 that produced a Henderson that I sent to PSA and got an 8 on. Mostly my extras from when I was a kid now in my Dodgers binder: ![]() I was always ticked off at pulling FIVE Johnny Oates and only one Steve Garvey. Id later learn that Garvey and others were single print. Anyway, my one Garvey. You can imagine what happened to the Hendersons. ![]() Last edited by dodgerfanjohn; 09-19-2021 at 12:38 PM. |

I eventually wound up with a set run from 1976 to present, and intend to eventually go backwards building sets. The 1980 set was particularly fun and a definite reliving of my childhood. |

Love this set too. All my childhood cards of it are beaters since I was 7 at the time . Rubber bands are murder on cards. I did get a vending box from Fritsch cards back in the 90s so I still have those and zero Rickeys from that. I opened up a few wax packs as well through the nineties with no luck. I had 2 sets that I sold 4-5 year ago that I wish I had back. The Rickeys from those were probably 7 or 8s but oh well maybe I’ll start it up again. Beautiful set and fond memories of childhood.

There are just some cards that define a certain year for me. The 80 Ryan is one of those. Awesome action shot & AS banner seal the deal. Same can be said for the 79 Rose and Carew cards, 78 Reggie, Doug Ault, Lenny Randle and a few more. The 70s (and 80 Topps) had some of the best looking cards ever made.
