I've always been fascinated with the goodwin Glasscock for a number of reasons, but one of them being the nature in the background. Can anyone tell me what on earth it is supposed to be behind him? It looks like he is on the beach, or at the park. I see sand, streams, etc. Does anyone have any info on this?
Finally, does anyone know what other cards out there have backgrounds with "nature" going on? ![]()

Baseball diamonds were not as regular as they are today; I believe many infields were just dirt. It's quite possible those are just a line of trees past the outfield of whatever park they were playing at.
Take a look at the Postcards thread that gets popped to the first page every once in a while to see the variety of fields during the 1880s. Add link: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthr...ight=postcards

It does look like Jack is playing on the beach!
I have always loved the Old Judge cards of the Brooklyn & California League players and the Kalamazoo Bats Philadelphia cards for the outdoor shots. I think the single greatest/worst background of a card is the 1973 Topps Luis Alvarado card. Where exactly is this game being played? I’m not convinced it isn’t an image of the Bad News Bears or something https://www.psacard.com/cardfacts/ba...rado-627/35252

Makes sense, inasmuch as Glasscock's nickname was "Pebbly Jack."

The Goodwin artist painted a sunset scene behind Anson indicative of him being at the "sunset of his BB career".
And, artist that designed the Kelly card painted a stormy background to match Kelly's "stormy" personality. ![]() TED Z T206 Reference . |

George HW Bush has this photo from his time at Yale, and Topps made it into a card during his presidency.
