This ball walked into my LCS today. After desperately trying to figure out some of these signatures, I've come to the conclusion the ball is a '56. But any and all input is appreciated. As my wife reminds me, I'm wrong a lot. I think the following are on the ball: Amoros, Snider, Reese, Furillo, Walker, Cimoli, Bessent, Robinson, Campanella, Erskine, Jackson, Labine, Drysdale, unknown, Loes, Nelson, Roebuck, Hodges, Gilliam, Williams, Koufax, Zimmer and Alston. As I only know cards, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this ball. Condition, value, collectibility, anything. Thank you

sounds like a 56 to me! good grab if the price was right! (no Cimoli in 1955, and no Robinson in 1957)
Collectability: High Condition: rough If I were you, and interested in selling it rather than keeping it, I'd send it off to PSA or one of the other authentication services and have it graded and certified. IDK what the costs would be for a multiple auto ball though. Maybe someone with experience will chime in?

I think the Robinson and Campanella might be clubhouse because they typically appear in that order.

I agree Robinson, Campanella, and Erskine in that order always seem to be clubhouse. Since those 3 are don't know for sure but would guess others might be to. Good ole Charlie

wow, interesting. My comments above were not about authenticity, but man it's good to get info like this. Do "clubhouse" signed balls have any value?

Yes, they have value, albeit somewhat limited. Many of the sigs on the ball are still authentic. Too bad the two "keys" are not. I'd estimate a ball like this being worth about a third to a quarter of a fully authentic one. Still better than a flat out forgery or one made with malicious intent.

For those not familiar, clubhouse signatures were as they sound, signed by someone in the dugout on behalf of the players. Back then there was no malicious intent.
The Dodgers of that era were known to often utilize clubhouse signatures, and as mentioned above it was not uncommon for Jackie, Campanella and Erskine to be clubhouses. One indication that this is the case is when they are all grouped on the same panel of the ball. How pervasive were clubhouse signatures? SCP auctions just auctioned off the Walt Alston collection including this 1956 team signed baseball from Alston's personal collection. And yet (amongst others) PSA deemed the Walt Alston signature on the ball a clubhouse signature ![]() http://catalog.scpauctions.com/bids/...e?itemid=30392 |
