Don't get to discouraged, there are a number of different Ruth's you could get for less than $1k, especially if you're willing to look at premiums, strip cards, or multi-player cards. Off the top of my head you could check out the 1929 Kashins, 35 Goudey, R309-1, w554, 1921 exhibits, etc. Most of these could probably be picked up in at least VG for $1k.

I got.....a Ty Cobb...the Sport Kings from BobbyW.
Sorry guys - I said "purchased the Ruth" only because I didn't want to waste anybody's time since I now need to regroup and get my funds back in order for the Ruth. Everyone here is so helpful and responsive I had to update the listing until I was ready to pull the trigger. Now I just need to sell one of my higher end Trouts first!
