Hi John:
These are from an instore display. See below. Were you bidding in the Mears auction for these cards? Fred Last edited by whiteymet; 11-03-2014 at 09:47 PM. |

Certainly explains the clipped corner. Seems like it went for way too much if it was a cutout.

Thanks for the reply! It's this kind off information sharing that makes this forum great.
I bid early, but got knocked out pretty quickly. I had no idea what they were, just that they looked cool.

If the below ungraded card and others sold previously could sell for $210 or more, then these at $185 each seem to be a pretty good deal in my eyes. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1962-Post-Ce...item35dc613a2c Last edited by whiteymet; 11-04-2014 at 09:54 AM. |

I'm not saying final price was good or bad, but your comparison assumes that these display cutouts are generally accepted as cards. The cards that came on the side of cereal boxes were supposed to be cut out and collected. Were these? Just because there are fewer of them doesn't mean they're more valuable unless there is demand as well. Obviously 2 people thought so at least in this case, so I don't know the answer. Have you seen prior sales to compare this hammer price to?

I doubt the buyer did not know what they were. I was an underbidder. I knew they were not regular issue box cards. I assumed that they were from a POP display or advertisement of some sort [it is really nice to see the display, thanks for posting it Fred].
The fact that MEARS was ignorant wasn't a serious factor. They are cool as heck. IMHO display items are second only to production items in terms of rarity, so whether they were cut from a display or constitute a full display is really only a matter of pricing rather than desirability. A proper full display I think would have brought a multiple of the hammer price of these 'cards'. If the winner doesn't want them, I'll take them at my bid...They'd look real nice in an SGC holder; they do nice work with display items under 9" tall.

I agree entirely with what Adam says about the rarity of these items. If it had been the entire display, we are talking BIG BUCKS as Adam noted As for the buyer not knowing what they are, rest assured he (I) knew. I just wish the Unitas would have been included so I could have added that to my collection too. As you know Adam I am not a graded guy but your suggestion about having SGC encapsulate it has me thinking...... Fred |

That's cool. It doesn't sound like you bought them to flip for a quick profit any way. So long as you're happy with the cards and the price you paid that's all that really matters.

Go for it, Fred. Every large item like this I've had encapsulated looks really spiffy when it is done, costs way less than a proper framing job would, and makes the eventual sale a lot easier.
