Best looking Grover Alexander card?

1915, 1916, 1917 and 1920. These were the 4 years Grover Alexander won the Pitching Triple Crown. Nobody else has ever claimed this distinction 4 times. Not Walter Johnson, Mathewson, Grove nor Koufax. One of the most underrated pitchers of all time.

I am looking for an eye appealing Grover Alexander card as I currently have none. But tough finding one I like with good eye appeal. Suggestions? Thanks.

I'd probably go with the 1914 Cracker Jack, though it is very pricey. I settled for a 1913 National Game, which was still high, but quite a bit lower than the CJ. The Sporting News issue is okay and while I'm not a huge fan of strip cards, there is a decent portrait of GCA on one.

There is also a nice colorized card of him in the 1961 Golden Press set.

Only other Alexander I own is the M101-2 but I don't have scans of it

I'm really not trying to be a jerk I swear but I love his 1960 fleer card as a cheap pick up. A great image. Also like the 1940 play ball.

I shall be committing a referral you probably already know of, and worthy of the back of the hand by some, but honestly, why not a PSA graded mint 1961 Golden Press Hall of Fame. Exquisitely carrying a full length colorized action pose of a young 'Ol Pete at the height of his fame with the Phils. The CJ IS a beaute, but your bank account shan't suffer, and neither will your eyes feasting on that beautiful Golden Press image. Just my two cents. ---Brian Powell

PS---Adding a third cent, Alec is card number two in the Golden Press set, which was issued as a complete set in booklets, with the cards die-cut and easily punched out. The significance of Alec being the second card is that he was thus on the cover of the Golden Press booklet. Being on the cover brought frequent rubbing with other booklets, as well as handling by the various individuals in the grocery stores where they were sold (and then by the very few hobby dealers that sold them after '61, and eventually at sport card shows/conventions). The rubbing of booklets was the catalyst for scuffing up the pictures on the first three cards. This is a typical problem with those first three cards; again, which includes Grover, as well as Mel Ott and Babe Ruth. Therefore, a PSA Mint 9 might not be quite so easy, and after reading the above, surely puts the card amongst a small class above the others that were not on the cover. Now that I think of it, there may have been a few cards on the back cover as well....

Yep, that's the card. If I wasn't so concerned about focusing my collection toward the 19th century, I would go after that one.

Personally I don't like the CJ, if you look closely at his face it is not a good image of him it's almost cartoonish like an E91.

Most of the black and white cards have a tiny head shot for some reason. The W517 has a great portrait although it's generally not an attractive issue.

I went with the Fatima but they are hard to find. It took me years to find this one.

Yeah, although the scan heightens that effect, it's much better in hand (or with a good scanner ).

While it is not a flattering image his 1931 W517 card has in my opinion his most compelling portrait. Even at the height of his accomplishments and fame Pete was always battling an array of personal demons. The stark, weathered face on that card is a testament to his struggle.

Thanks for sharing, love the cards. But put me down for a 1916 m101 type card, I like the photo. Just checked ebay, not a one to be found any grade either SGC or PSA, hmmm, that scarce? Anybody have a nicely centered SGC/PSA 5 or 6 - would go a tad over SMR.

What bothers me more about the CJ issue is that it looks like he's posing post-follow thru, but he's still got the ball in his hand.

+++1. I have had one that is nearly perfectly centered with sharp corners that appears NMT or better, but with the usual wrinkles, for 16 years now. It comes out at the auction following my death!
