A week or so ago someone posted a message asking about value for a sheet of S-74 silks that had all been sewn together and that they were interested in buying. They posted a picture and the discussion got around to how the silks were originally to be used to make pillows and such and that once used that way, the collector value was diminished and they became more like folk art. I personally like the silks (and other pre-war items from back in the day) that were used by people and incorporated into interesting and useful items. Not sure this type of thread has ever been started before (and apologies if it has). I'm sure at least a few of you has some item that used a vintage card or silk in an unusual way. Lets see some pre-war folk art items! I'll start off with this crocheted S-74 silk that someone obviously spent a good amount of time on doing the required needlework.
S74 Crocheted.jpg I actually think that there is value in items like this that have lasted for 100+ years, and that they become like antiques and have an intrinsic value of their own that can transcend beyond just the silks or cards as collectible items themselves. Thanks, Bob C |

Thanks, it is definitely a little different and shows another way to use/display some of the items we like to collect.

I always liked this B18 pin cushion. I purchased it on eBay about 10 years ago for $5.00. I think I overpayed by about $5.00, but it has "eye appeal" in my mind!

I had to deal with untangling this mess of B18 felts. Luckily one came out good.

Leon,
That is a neat piece. Is that supposed to be a pillow cover or just a flat place mat type piece? Also, any idea what happened to the missing fringe? Scott, Also a neat item. Were those felts attached to something that you had to pull them off? Didn't look like the Johnson felt had any sewing holes or marks in it so I'm guessing they weren't sewed onto something. |

I have never had it outside the frame it is now in, and came with when I got it. They were called Pillow Tops though so my belief is that you would lay it on top of a pillow to add color to a room. However, I am not sure of that. As for the missing piece, I have no idea as it came that way to me and I am sure it came that way to the person I got it from (through an auction house). When viewing it up close the pennants on it are fantastic. Edited to add, they put out Movie Star Pillow Tops too...and below those is a picture of another board members ink blotter, from Ferguson Bakery, explaining their contest with prizes and so forth... ![]() ![]()

Leon,
That latest item is a really nice piece. Fantastic display item IMHO. If I can figure out how to scan and put it up, I'll try to show you this I piece I have made from Ferguson pennants. It wasn't one of the pillow tops like you have but, one that some individual must have made by hand themselves. Very nice piece you have though. I am surprised there aren't more people that have things like this to show. I know these unique pieces are out there. Thanks for sharing. Bob |
