Those are some cool letters Dan. I've got this one on it's way to me
Pretty rough condition as its a magazine photo that has been glued into a scrapbook page and cut out, but it has a beautiful signature of an American sports icon, Jackie Robinson |

Just got this today,,,
Original sports cartoon art, 1930 pen and ink on heavy art paper mounted on a heavy board.The artist was noted Boston sports cartoonist Bob Coyne (1898 - 1976). The artwork is of Cy Young and measures 17"x 16". Absolutely spectacular and best of all it contains a 1930 dated Cy Young AUTOGRAPH and inscription at the bottom. Also signed by the artist Bob Coyne.

I have been collecting signed Perez-Steele post cards for over 25 years and was really disappointed when they stopped issuing the set a little over 10 years ago. I'm down to needing just the big dogs to have every possible post card that could be signed. Recently, I was looking through old REA catalogs and saw that last year the original Dick Perez paintings for most everyone enshrined since 2001 were sold at auction. Each of the paintings, in the style of the original post cards, was there for me to see and when I Googled the images on the internet, they were in surprisingly good resolution. So I decided to print each of the "unreleased" paintings out on 4x6 glossy photo paper and create my own extended set...here's the first one I've gotten back...
It would be an understatement to say I'm reinvigorated to pick up autographs of Ripken, Ozzie, Ryne, et al...

Big Six,
I was scrolling through this post quickly on my phone, saw the Boggs pic and thought "wtf?!?". Not to pat myself on the back, but I thought I was the smartest guy out there assembling these and that one day when the project was over I would post them all on message boards and everyone would be blown away. Ive been getting them printed at Walgreens and they come out beautifully. The best part is if you lose one in the mail, youre out nine cents. Looks like Ive got some competition..... |

Dan, those letters are great! Such a nice insight into the mindset of fan-player relationships when the players were more like regular guys than movie stars.

Talei was in Denver earlier this month for comi-con so I would check some of the other states comi-con events where he may show up at. Also, and obviously, I'd check the Star Trek conventions where you might be able to ge Nimoy also.

I finally found my Joe Dawson signature for my 1927 Pirates collection!!! Just about gave up hope of ever finding one and boom! Even better because it's the only one I've ever seen from his playing days. Won this last night in a 1920's Clean Sweep lot:

Carlos Zambrano
Not vintage, but I got my Carlos Zambrano no-hitter ticket signed by "Z' at tonight's Mud Hens game. They were hosting the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (AAA affiliate of the Phillies). Zambrano is currently trying to work his way back up to the majors. He shut out the Mud Hens (AAA affiliate of the Tigers) 3-0 last night.
Zambrano was very nice and knocked out about 10 autographs including mine after BP. Zambrano never seems to do paid signings, so this is a nice addition to my collection. I now have 122 different signed MLB no-hitter tickets in my personal collection. Last edited by Scott Garner; 06-21-2013 at 01:08 PM. |

What's the story on why a game between the Cubs and Astros was in Milwaukee?
|
#39
|
||||
|
||||
The series was supposed to be played in Houston, but a hurricane was hitting Texas so they moved the games to Milwaukee.

Because the game venue was changed at the last minute, only computerized tickets were issued to this game. Chicago is pretty close to Milwaukee so quite a few die-hard Cubs fans made the hour trek north to catch the game. Carlos Zambrano made it worth their while, pitching the most unusual of no-hitters; the first and only no-hitter ever pitched in a neutral stadium... Nothin like a Vintage HOF sig, done with a with steel fountain pen, on a tough card. Granted there are a few Marquards floating around out there on different cards, but many appear signed later on in his life. Is this possibly from his playing years?

VERY Cool Marquard, but.... Nobody EVER signed Caramel cards or Tobacco cards when they were made or during their careers, it just didn't happen even though there are some certified (FAKE) ones. If you ever see one, its fake and run away. The late 1920's are the first instances of signed cards that I can ever recall seeing and even those were all larger format cards that were more like photos than cards. Goudey cards are basically the earliest you will ever find (with a few exceptions) of signed cards that autographed around the time they were made.
Also, you can tell that the card was signed after it was creased so it was obviously signed after it had some age to it. I would guess it was signed in the 1940's-1950's (still using a fountain pen) which is still VERY early for a signed c. 1910 Baseball Card. It doesn't change anything, it is a BEAUTIFUL item, I just figured I would throw that info out there to help you correctly date the item. Rhys |

3-year autograph mini autograph project completed
Not pre-war, but lots of fun... My daughter Sadie helped me complete a 3-year autograph project on Saturday.
Perhaps some of you remember the Armando Galarraga "Almost Perfect" game on June 2, 2010. Umpire Jim Joyce blew the call on the 27th out to prevent Galarraga from becoming the 21st player in ML history to throw a perfect game. My wife, kids and I are die-hard Detroit Tigers fans. When the game occurred in 2010, as is typical on most nights in our household, we watched in HORROR as fate stole an unbelievable game from Galarraga and the Tigers. I felt compelled to e-mail MLB commissioner Bud Selig the next day to see if I could convince him to reverse the call. No chance, as Mr. Selig is the "Master of Inaction"... I was shocked to receive a response letter back from Mr. Selig a few days later. Over the last few years, I have managed to track down all three of the players mentioned in Selig's letter regarding one of baseball's strangest games: Armando Galarraga, umpire Jim Joyce and finally Detroit Tiger's Manager Jim Leyland. Leyland does not frequently sign autographs, so I was thrilled when a baseball card show in the Detroit area offered up the Detroit skipper on Saturday. Mission accomplished! Here is the completed letter project; something that my family and I can share forever... I also have included photos of my daughter Sadie, Mr. Leyland, Paws (the Detroit Tiger's mascot) and me. Additionally, here's a photo of a theme ball signed by Armando Galarraga and umpire Jim Joyce surrounding the "Almost Perfect" game. BTW, Galarraga and Joyce wrote a terrific book that I recently read on the game entitled "Nobody's Perfect". Check it out, it's a great read Enjoy! Can't wait to get this in mail. Sadly tho, due to my serious financial trouble, am trying to sell my Red Sox/jimmy fund Lic plate to help pay for it. Still, this is a nice item IMO, plus its BROOKLYN and a solid player or I wouldn't have bit.
