Not being an expert about the printing process of these cards, can some one please explain why it is this card is blurry while other examples in the set are not.

Looks fine to me.
Step away from the computer and put down the bourbon. JK, seems to be registration issues stemming from the the printing process of this particular card.

Yeah it looks like it is just that particular card. Most Kelly's I have seen have a clearer image.
Here is a scan of mine. Still, even without a perfect image, the N162 Kelly is one of the absolute best looking cards out there. Last edited by honus94566; 04-27-2013 at 09:23 AM. |

How is it possible that only this one card would be like this? Wouldn't the cards that followed be like this as well?

NOt sure how these were printed sheet wise but I think it is safe to assume that there are others with registration problems somewhere.

Exactly.....I am sure there are other Kellys with similar printing characteristics. Great looking card and was my type from the set when I did 19th century.

If it is true that this image could be limited to a few examples, could these examples me considered factory defects like ghost images and mis cuts that you see with t206 cards?

To me, maybe they would be a slight printing error. Unfortunately this one would have the opposite effect of a t206 value, imo.

The player image looks blurry to me.
For all multi color cards and multi color printing, if the color printing plates aren't perfectly aligned during printing there can be a blurriness. Happens in Topps cards with some frequency. Best bet that's the case here. Last edited by drc; 04-27-2013 at 12:47 PM. |

Thanks! It's a PSA 3 (has a small bit of paper loss on the back)
But definitely one of the best cards in my collection. |

The quality of the lithography of most of these N162 cards is spectacular. George Harris & Sons Lithographic (of Philadelphia) printed
these cards. This printing firm was one of the best on the East coast in the late 19th Century. Occasionally, though, N162 cards are found with poor registration. Over the years, I have upgraded my Kelly four times to attain the quality of this card. ![]() TED Z __________________________________________________ ______________________ LOOKING FOR these T206 guys to complete my AMERICAN BEAUTY 460 sub-set AMES....CAMNITZ....CRAWFORD (bat)....DOYLE (port)....JORDAN (bat)....MARQUARD McGRAW (port-cap).....McQUILLAN (bat).....TINKER (bat off).....WILTSE (port-cap) Last edited by tedzan; 04-27-2013 at 06:17 PM. |

Those are really nice looking cards, Ted. Some friends and I normally comment on how some of the least rare cards (relatively speaking) are so difficult to find in really nice condition. And I know many of us have held out for a long time for just the right card, when ones that are similar abound.

It's not just the BB guys....I love this entire set of Sports cards....IMO, they are the best in the hobby.
In the process of upgrading these guys, I put together 3.5 sets during the past 23 years. They are absolutely my favorite set in my entire collection. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() TED Z |
