I realize that there is not much value in say 1990 or 1986 topps sets, but I was wondering, lets say there was a completely graded 1986 set with a GPA of like 9.40. A mix of all nine's and 10's. I realize it would cost a few thousand to get all these cards graded. What do you think a set like that would sell for? $200, $1000, $3000? Thoughts...

I would give you $35 shipped for it...

That was not one of the choices, Doug. How much if I hand deliver it ?
Or, what if the set were ungraded and I threw in these print dots, glorified or not...the blue streak Seaver and Clemens, several weird backs like this one, and an extra Rose ![]() Last edited by ALR-bishop; 11-04-2012 at 04:54 PM. |

I just did the math on how much grading a whole set would cost at $5 a card.
Almost 4000 ![]() Unless you found the one person that just had to have the nicest 86 set out there I think getting the grading fee back would be very tough. I'm not even sure you'd get halfway there. Now the blue stripe cards and the ones with only one color on the back....Those might do a bit better. Although Krukcards did at one point sell a couple 3200ct boxes full of blank and wrong backs which went cheap. Steve B |

My guess is it would be in the High Hundreds but below 1000. Which is nowhere close to break even on what it would cost to grade them all. Someone would pay in that range but if you look and see a 1960's set goes for, obviously not in a 9.4 gpa, I can't see it breaking 1000.

The above Rose was hand cut from the top of one of the 1986 boxes, but there was yet another Rose that was part of the bottom Box panel set, A through P. ( could not get both images to post together for some reason)

Not much since I have a box that isn't cut.
![]() I have a few cards cut from boxes that aren't the usual ones. Some of the Kelloggs that were on the box fronts as ads, that sort of thing. Steve B |

I think you could generate a few thousand dollars selling the cards off individually. You would definitely do better this way than selling as a single set.

I guess in a way what I'm really asking is whether or not the 1986 set is an overlooked set. Would it be somewhat tough to get "10's" due to the black borders, much like the 1971 set. I also think it is fascinating how a card say a 1981 Henderson goes from being in a dollar box to being a somewhat big deal if it can grade a 9 or 10. Just my 2 cents/thoughts.

The 1986 Topps set is not overlooked. You could get it for $10 in 1986 and 26 years later you can get it for......$10.

Tiffany's BIN's are more, but also not selling. PSA 9's of Nolan Ryan list for $14.00. Mattingly $5.00. A lot of 25 9's is at $29.00 with 9 hours left. I don't think you would come close to breaking even by getting this set graded. |

I think there are a few guys doing 86 Topps Registry sets. There is a thread on it over on the CU registry forum. I would think 10's would be real tough to get in that year. I have looked at a bunch of them that I have and those black borders are tough.
I opened a rack pack box a while back and those cards were nicer than ones from a wax box I think. I still have 6 or 7 wax boxes to open as well. I was going to try to make a nice raw set for myself one day. Maybe that will be a winter project. LOL I am partial to this set because 86 Topps was the first packs I remember buying and opening. I didnt really get into baseball cards until I was 10 years old. |

from an investment standpoint, i can't imagine you'd make your money back with an '86 "high grade" set. There are SOOOO many '86s out there ungraded that if they started to bring extra money in high grade, people would start sending them in and flooding the market with 9s and 10s to drive the prices right back down.
I do think its a nice set. It was the first set I was given as a kid from my parents and started me in collecting. |
