New E107 Wagner discovery?

I was reading the thread regarding the Louisiana Find on the Full Count vintage forum, and they were saying it has been a great month - first the E-107 Wagner, and now the T207 red cross cards.

I tried to search their site, but came up empty. Does anyone know if there has been a new discovery of this card? If so, can someone post a link to the story or a picture of the card?

I'm pretty sure they are referring to one of the members of that forum (I believe he is over here too) having picked up an E107 Wagner that had been one of his "ultimate" cards to obtain for a long time. It wasn't a new E107 Wags discovery (unless I'm mistaken).

I thought it may have been a new discovery, but the card shown above does belong to a fellow board member that he purchased this year. I talked to him about it a few weeks ago.

I'm sure he will chime in, he has an awesome HOF E107 collection.

Card originated from the large (approx 140 cards) Lipset Lot of a few years ago. Didn't know it had been separated from that group and thought it, together with the others in the Lot, was traded off for a T206 Wagner last year.

The shown card is mine and was a recent pickup for me. Though I certainly appreciate the compliment (thank you Tony), my small collection pales to many, many other collections here. That said, my well-loved E107 Wagner is not new to the hobby (just new to me) and was not part of the mentioned big trade of a few years ago (2008 or so).

You do certainly know how to get my attention with thread titles, though... I'll give you that!

Congrats on that card. In my opinion, it is definitely one of the most important cards in the hobby and one of my personal favorites.

Whether or not is an inexpensive or expensive card it is always special to be able to scatch a key card off of your want list. Now you just have to find a Mathewson to match it.

I have never worked on the set, but over the years, I have seen more Wagners than Mathewsons than Delahantys. I would love to hear from one of the guys who has really tracked the sales of these cards for a long time.

Graded pops of the three are all similar, but I was previously told that Matty is tougher than Wagner. Admittedly, that comment was before the most recent find of a beautiful E107 Matty that ended up being sold at a live auction in Baltimore this year.

The SGC + PSA graded pops of the three are: Wagner (4), Matty (4), and Delahanty (5). Obviously, this doesn't account for the raw versions of each of the 3 biggies, but I think Kevin is accurate in his statement that less than 10 of each have survived. Putting it another way... I have not heard any evidence that suggests there are more than single digit pops of any of those 3 cards.

That there are likely less than 10 examples around of each of the E107's?

You may never see images of some of those team variations, some have only a couple known. Most of the near sets are only missing team variations.

To answer another post above, some of the subjects have dozens known, mostly A's players, such as Hartsel and Pickering.

I think that is probably a fair assumption, but I do know of a couple cards that have more than a single digit population. So, while it is probably a fair estimate for most of the cards, a couple are a touch more "common" than others. On the other hand, some are downright scarce and I'm not even sure that one of every single card has survived.

Some of the backs state "one of a hundred and fifty prominent baseball players" To my knowledge, there aren't 150 different players that have been found on cards. I think the number is 147, but couldn't swear to it - since I am largely focused on the HOFers instead of the entire set. There are team variations of a few players, so the number of known cards is more than 150, but the number of known players is not. The checklist is presumed to be complete with less than 150 players, though.

Does anybody know how many E107 Cy Youngs exist? I'm asking because I'm getting one soon and just curious to know exactly how rare it is.

I haven't checked PSA's pop report recently since I'm not a member, but at last check, PSA + SGC had a combined 10. It actually totals 11, but at least two in the population (the PSA 5 and SGC 60) represent the same card being crossed over. I'd suspect there are around 20 or so out there if you count all the graded and raw ones. Others may have a better handle on the number of raw ones out there for a more accurate number, but 20 is a reasonable estimate, IMO.

Somebody can check the PSA pop report, but my numbers are based on them having graded 2. SGC currently shows 9 graded.

I could be wrong, but I believe Mile High is going to be auctioning off the SGC 60 E107 Young once again in their December 2011 auction. (This is not my card)

Phil, you may be right, who knows?

Some previous results (includes bp):

$79K - Mile High March 2009
$53K - Mile High Oct 2009
$66K - Goodwin July 2011
$58k - Memory Lane Aug 2011

Since Mile High first auctioned the card, the final prices haven't come close to the $79K. It will be interesting to see what it sells for in Dec 2011.
