Spelling variations are not catalogued as thoroughly as others such as team changes. The batting pose of Rusie (pose 5) is currently only catalogued as "Rusie P., Indianapolis" (an Fc, 1889 card). Pose 3 is catalogued both ways, "Rusie" and "Russie". Can you post a scan?

Yes the card is real. I have learned they printed in white on all the cards on the negative and then printed in black over the white negative so they knew the player and team, and sometimes missed and went a little bit low. Now i have been looking at old judges and have seen a couple where the black name was a little below the white name. I just have never seen where they were two different spellings on the same card, I thought this card was different because the misspelled RUSSIE in black didn't cover the correct spelling of RUSIE in white.

First Chris, the correct spelling is Rusie. The white lettering on the glass plate negative identified the player (lettering was black on the negative). When the cards were made 24 cabinet sized photos produced from negatives were placed in a 6x4 array, strips with the player's name, position, and team were placed near the bottom of each image, Goodwin & Co identification was placed below that, and the array was rephotographed. This sheet was then glued to cardboard, cut up, and this gave us 24 cards. The Russie in black was not an attempt to correct a prior spelling error (they would have done that directly on the negative), it was just a spelling mistake in the name plate. These happen fairly regularily in the Old Judge set and, as Joe mentioned, this spelling variation is known in another Rusie pose. My guess is that it will be found in all the poses if one looks carefully.

I corrected what i said,i thank you for your knowledge as i know very little about thes cards. I was going off of what a guy told me at work as far as the white being the negative to identify the team and player so the guy doing the printing would not mess up.

After reading the following, I was wondering which, if any, of these stars are on Old Judge cards that say Players League. Any help would be appreciated. I don't have the book to look them up so I'm hoping someone can help!
Thanks, Bill The Players League Triple Crown leaders were Hall-of-Famer Roger Connor with 14 home runs, Pete Browning with a .373 batting average, and Hardy Richardson with 146 RBI. For pitchers, Mark Baldwin had 34 wins, Silver King had a 2.69 ERA, and Mark Baldwin struck out 211 batters. On June 21 King threw an unofficial eight-inning no-hitter. Oddly, in its one season of operation, the Players League saw seven triple plays: the Giants on June 14, the Red Stockings on June 30, the Pirates on July 15, the Pirates again on July 30, the Burghers on August 15, Ward's Wonders on September 6, and the Bisons on September 29.[1] |
