I purchased this on ebay. When I got it, I noticed the signature has a sort of stamped appearance. I'm not sure. Perhaps, this may just be the type of pen used. Was Sugar Ray noted for using a stamp?
I'm looking for opinions on this. Thanks for any help. Mark ![]() ![]()

I'm guessing "stamped" as there is an apparent ink remnant above and just to the left of the "S" in Sugar. It looks like the inked stamp may have grazed the paper in that spot.
Not to mention the obvious... it just looks stamped rather than signed. |

I don't recall ever seeing a Sugar Ray stamp but that looks a bit odd.
Maybe a leaky later in life sharpie. |

I am also torn. The sig itself matches quite well with a number of exemplars I was able to find. In the auction listing, the sig looked fairly normal, but in person it looks a little fishy.
Now, I have to decide to keep or return it. Do any other autograph collectors/dealers have any opinion on stamp vs sig? Thanks, Mark

Mark, I agree that it's real close to all of the exemplars I have seen of Sugar Ray, so I too would say it's either a stamp or real with a leaky pen.

I myself feel it looks a little funny, but then again it could just be a poor signature. I do not believe he is noted for using a stamped signature that much, but I am sure there are some examples.

I believe it is a stamp as well. I have seen on before, a long time ago.

If it was ink like that I would think there would be some type of bleed through to the inside. Check that. You can also check under that piece of tape, see if the "ink" is under it or not.
Just a few things that might help. No clue on the auto really, just been around a lot of paper. James G

I had a very similar recent experience with an Oscar De La Hoya autograph or stamp on an olympic piece that I ended up returning. Send it back. Sugar Ray is not a scarce autograph--I've owned three of them, including 2 on 1951 Ringside cards--you will find another that is unimpeachable that will make you much happier in the long term.

James,
Here is a scan of the back of the sig. Also the ink is on top of the tape. ![]() Adam, I agree that Sugar isn't the hardest auto. The reason, I would love this to be real is the fact that it is a signed "SPORT" magazine. If you look at my photobucket site, in my sig, you can see my collection of Sport magazine, which are autographed. That's why I am trying to be as sure as I can. I am almost ready to return it. I'm just a little disappointed. Thanks, Mark
