Anyone have any insight to why Philadelphia Gum had a contract with the NFL to produce football cards from 1964-1967 and not TOPPS... Were there NFL and Philadelphia Gum buddies near the top? There had to be some kind of connection because Philly even got permission to use the NFL Shield in 1967...

I would like th add that I think (from a designers standpoint) that the Philadelphia Gum football cards are the best designed football cards of the 1960's. I know the Topps are the meat and potatoes of the collectors, but those Philly cards are beautiful. |

I never cared much for Philly card designs.. When I first started collecting football cards, I had a hard time destinguishing between the years.. My favorite 1960s football card design has to be 1962 Topps... martyOgelvie nyyankeecards.com |
