Set variations

If you are a set collector and the set can be collected multiple ways, does anyone else get obsessed with doing that....for example the 74 Topps Deckles can be collected in white back, gray back or proof form. The 85 Topps Minis can be collected in regular back, blank back or red back. the 1982 Topps set, or half of it, can be collected in blackless, and to some extent in blueless. The 84 Topps set can be collecte in part in Encased format.

I do to a certain extent. The '54 Bowman set has a bunch of statistical variations on the backs that I rationalized into ignoring, but didn't consider a lot of other sets complete until I had the variations.

My favorite post war variations

1. '49 Leaf Aberson short sleeve
2. '58 Herrer
3. '60 Fleer Martin/Grove, Tinker/Grove, Collins/Grove (anyone got the last 2 of these for sale or trade?)
4. '54 Red Man Mele, Kell and Philley team affiliation variations
5. '57 Checklist Bazooka/Blony
6. '67 Topps Maris Yankees Proof
7. '49 Leaf Hermansk
8. '49 Leaf Peterson Red cap
9. '57 Bakep
10. '51 Redbacks Holmes
11. '60 Leaf Big Heads



Has anyone ever seen the '60 Topps variations that are in the Lemke guide?

Anthony...I would like to know about the 60s variations. I have one for Conley ( 239), but that is it for front variations. I have not gotten into the 375-440 white/gray backs. Would also like to know about Lemke's publication.

I have the Herrer and Bakep, and the Maris proof...and one of the Fleer #80s, I think the same one you have, hand cut. I also have the 8 57 checklist variations. I have never collected Lea,f but really like thos Big Head variations

Al-
Lemke's book is the Krause Standard Guide. While I don't have it in front of me, I think there are 3 pre production variations (team affiliations) in the set that were never issued in packs, and all the subjects involved were part of a Yanks-A's trade. Marv Throneberry is one of them, I think.
I've got 11 years of Mastro and other auction catalogs but have yet to see one offered. I think I read that Keith Olberman had them, figured between you, Bob, Dave H. and Larry one of you guys would have them.

Ok, I am familar with those. They are like the 67 Maris, blank back proofs never put into production. Hadley with A's logo and Cimoli with Cardinals logo are confirmed, but Thronberry in a Yankees logo is, as far as I know, unconfirmed. If these things ever show up, I predict they will rival the prices for the 51 Konstanty, Roberts and Stankey

I have three complete sets all cut into individual cards. One set is graded with a GPA of 8.9. Global is the only company I found that will grade them.

Kevin...those are good ones too. I have an uncut sheet of themI i am trying to get my wife to frame, along with an uncut sheet of the 1964 Stand Ups I got from Topps Vault that has hand written notations all over it about color and other editing changes....then there are those great Topps Thirst Break Comics with the gooey green gum ( used to be orange) that I am trying to get someone to agree to chew....

Oh man, those are a mess!!! Although, I thought the gum was orange?

But I finally have a complete set...thanks! Also have several extras now.

btw....PSA will not grade them, I tried.

About the 84 encapsulated, I know Keith C. cut up a set, do you kow of anyone else who has? IMO those are really tough as individuals. For a long time the Ryan was Bob's white whale.

I saw you posted a set for sale last week, but was wondering:
1) is there a complete set checklist for this 84 Encased proof issue?
2) What would I expect to pay (assuming I ever found one) for singles of Rickey Henderson, Ozzie Smith, and Ryne Sandberg (assuming they are in this issue)?

Henderson is in it. There are 66 on the uncut sheets. O Smith and Sandberg are not. I bought my uncut sheet for $ 100. The singles are tougher, but price has dropped due to the recent "glut' of sheets.

As Al says, the sheets have come down in price. I spent around $200 - $300 each. The value is in the individual cards, since most sheets stay in-tact.

I bought a slighlty OC Boggs some time ago for about $40. My guess is a nice raw Henderson will cost you about $50 - $75. Finding one might be the biggest problem.

When I was collecting my 1970's Topps sets..I did the same thing..trying to get all the variations..like the 74 Washington cards, Alou No position, Apodaca/Apodaco.

Here is my one of my favorite variations..the 67 Maris Yankees card. The guy I got if from bought it back in the ol days from Woody Gelman.

That's one variation I don't have, and I'm a huge variation collector. I've actually discovered a couple of 'new' ones. Real variations, not the stupid printing anomalies you see all over ebay these days. If anyone wants to compare notes. LMK. I collect 1957 to 1973.

Al was great in helping me complete my Thirst set...don't know if I said thanks enough.

I have plenty of extras but since they weren't well distributed I think I have just the last half (or middle) of the set. My doctoring skills paid off with these. Spent some time soaking them flat and removing stains (not altered), so they came out as nice as possible.

This may be the only set where soaking is a necessity.

Anyone have any? The Reggie Card is famous..but there were several other good ones from that set. Topps Vault used to auction them quite a bit...haven't seen any pop up in awhile. I think a Sanguillen version was on ebay last year.

REA Auction used to sell the 77 uncut sheets with the proofs..and if I recall they also sold some individual cards..if I'm not mistaken.

I have few extra "clean" ones, and a bunch of ones still wrapped around the now ( 20+ years) goey gum. On those you can see who the person is, but you have to be a forensic scientist like Kevin to extract them ( actually not that bad, but they are like working with that slime on Ghost Busters) . There are 54 to a set as I recall. I agree with Kevin on the fact you can buy a box, as I did on ebay, and not come close to completing a set

Not too many for 57. I have the Bakep, and what PSA has labeled factory misprintas for Herzog and DeMaestri.Also, the 2 variations, Bony/Bazooka, of the 4 checklists. Also the 4 contest cards, the Lucky Penny send away card, and one actual Lucky Penny in case with chain...and an unopened 5 cent wax pack, a wrapper, and an unopened Christmas pack ( yes I know all about them )

1958 will take some time, but will do that one next

Yellows: 2/8/11/13 ( there are 3 versions of Hoeft)/20/23/24/30/32/33/35/46/50/52/53/57/58/60/61/65/70/76/77/78/79/81/85/ 92/97/98/100/101....Also 108 Drabowski...no last name on back ( print defect),306 Douglas...irregular top border front ( print defect). 377...Braves..383 Berberet 4 eyes...print drefect 397 Detroit 408...Orioles 412 Staley and 423 Clark...4 eyes (print defects) 428...Reds...433 Herrer ( mine is a PSA 7, but there are more thn one versions of this card depending on the extent of the print defect,,I also have a Herrera with two full faces), 440 Mathews,,,two mouths/4 eyes..print defect...Plus an Emblem insert card and a Contest card...one cent unopened wax pack...5 cent wrapper and Christmas rack pack ( yes i know)
