That has to be almost a record price on a B18 (not sure if Jackson is in the series) other than if there is a Jackson....I don't follow these too much. How rare is red? |

Not sure as to the exact number of red infields that exist, but this is the first that I have seen on Ebay. Here is Cobb red infield that sold via REA in 2005. I believe the red infields are just a brown infield printing error but still a legitimate variation. A nice Joe Jackson just ended the other day on Ebay for what I thought was a low price. |

I believe Randall is correct - if memory serves, red infields are only found for those players who have brown infield variations (Detroit and Boston players). |

I have been collecting these for 20 years and have seen 3-4 red infields for sale anywhere in that time. I only need Walsh (Browns) with the red basepaths to complete the set of all 90 players with both their color variations. I certainly would have been a bidder on that red infield if it had come up on my ebay search. |

We've got 5 red infields that we've bought at auction over the last ten years. We paid as much as $1600 for one, but then saw one sell for only $600 in a Mastro auction just a couple of years ago. They are extremely scarce, to say the least, but that scarcity is just not matched by collector interest in the set as a whole or these variations as a subset. Perhaps because they cannot be/have not successfully been third-party graded (GAI's effort was abysmal to say the least), they don't get as much attention as the otherwise might. I seem to recall a story that Mastro himself had a full set of the red infields, but I never heard if it was rumor or more than rumor. In any event, in high grade, these things are truly marvelous to behold, and a true, rare collectible in grade... good luck finishing the set! |
