Not a great scan, but doesn't look right. The team is from the 1880's, the mount is from the 1890's or later. And where are the period sepia tones (unless it is your scan)? |

The one sold by REA in 2004 is an 1880's cabinet. The other one almost certainly is a second generation photo, and I agree with Barry probably from the 1890's or later. Given it not being an original and its poor condition, I would measure its value as a few hundred dollars at most. |

I think it's fake...I saw it on ebay and had it in my watchlist I was going to post about it, but I had already posted two other threads about fake photos and didn't want to use the board as my own personal whining about ebay fakes board....It disappeared out of my watchlist and I assumed it got pulled. This was just last week. Did you get the seller to end it early? |

It was a BIN, Dan. |

Seems weird someone would have went to the trouble of creating a fake to fall into the hands of this ebay seller who would then put a $100 BIN on it? I would have at least thought if the seller was going to do that he would have mentioned what team it was or something more about it... |

Interesting...I didn't notice that it had a BIN on it when I first saw it. |

Dan, are you saying you think I should send it back to the seller? |

Nope, I'm not saying it's definitive that it is fake, but it is most certainly not period. The cabinet backing is wrong, the photo looks to me to not be original to the cabinet and on many items like this where someone tries to pass it off as real they will do some water damage to it. |

The photo does not look period. It might even be relatively modern and recently glued to a ca. 1900 mount. And the wear may also be fake, to make it look old. Sorry, but I don't like anything about it. |

Dave, a second generation photo would not necessarily have the dot pattern. It could be a real photo attached to an old cabinet backing. |

Someone glued a second generation photo to an old mount and there is no way it is authentic. The hard crease on the lower left is not present on the photo portion which means it was added later, plus the gray-tome image would not have been used in the 1880's. Lastly, the gray colored bordered mounts like it is adhered to did not first become vogue in photography until about 1900-1905 from my experience as an antique photo collector. All signs point to someone trying to make a $100 item out of a $1 photo and a .25 cent mount. |
