Mark Macrae and I shared a table in Cleveland and we had a great show....selling....buying....trading......Wed. thru Friday.
The best part of it was meeting and talking Base Ball (cards) with many Net54er's for the 1st time. Here are the members

Great talking to you, too......especially about one of my favorite subjects......the 1949 LEAf BB set.

At this point, I don't think I will be in Chicago in '08. But, I would like to return to Cleveland in 2009.

Also, you can always catch me at the Philly Show in Reading......next show is Oct 12 - 14th 2007.

Ted, it was very nice meeting you in person. You are all I expected . Meeting and carousing with 120-125 Net54'ers and friends, on Thursday night, was my highlight. I couldn't have asked for a better time...The E100 type 2 I picked up isn't shabby either.....All in all another wonderful National...I hope they seriously consider looking at other venues too...though I would guess it's a "bottom line" kinda thing....regards

The highlights for me were trading and meeting guys like Ted Z., Leon, and Scott B. I really enjoyed my purchases from Ted Z. and Scott B. I added a total of 29 t206's, which was huge for me, and got rid of a lot of pre-war cards (goudeys, obaks, and p2's) to help fund my purchases. I also had my parents come up from Dayton and had a ball with them. My Dad is hooked on t-cards and I couldn't believe it, but my Mom started her own T-201 set. We love this hobby and had a great time! Thanks for your kindness Ted!

This was my first National, and I was impressed with the size but the selection of specific cards was a bit disappointing.

The highlight of the whole show was the Net54 dinner. It was just awesome to meet and chat with people that have such a wealth of knowledge and are so willing to share it.

I can't say enough about how great Leon is and I can only hope to make every dinner from now on.

I am looking forward to next year.

One of the interesting features of the early Nationals (in the 1980's) were the Seminar sessions. Very interesting BB card issues
were presented and discussed. Most of these seminars were very professionally conducted and well attended.

We should make an effort to revive such seminars in future Nationals. And for starters, Scot, I would like to nominate you to give
the seminar on the T206 set.

I was telling someone at the national that I don't know why it is called a convention when there is no formal lectures, seminars, classes, etc. going on. I would love a lecture area. I would also love to see a kids area, kind of like Sports Fest did when they first started, as well as a roped off section that no money is allowed to be exchanged, only trading. I envision collectors sitting on the floor, or tables, trading cards like a bunch of 10 year olds. Heck, if it catches on maybe there will be some 10 year olds too.

Next year I plan to attend the National, as my wife likes the Chicago area and has already agreed to go.

It will be my first card show in a LONG time ... like 10+ years I'd say.

It'd be fun to see some lectures/talks by some of the more knowledgeable people. T206 lectures, maybe a hands-on authenticity 101 lecture on how to spot fakes/alterations etc, pre-war lecture on what cards in general exist in the pre-war era, a packaging forum to show the wrappers and cartons etc that the cards came in. stuff like that would be very interesting to me. Even a small fee ($5-10?) to attend wouldn't be bad. Just some thoughts. Can't wait till next year.

p.s. A presentation by Scot/Ted on T206 sounds wonderful!

I posted my pic last night on the N/S side if you want to confirm it's me or not .... In any event, I am a member of 7/8 different collecting "clubs". When I am able to go the yearly gatherings for at least 2 of them - there are lectures and discussions as well as swapping - auctions (silent and otherwise) - and just general interaction either in rooms or such things like Leon's dinner. It's something that tends to complete the experience IMO.....

a seminar given by Mr. Saucier on alterations, complete with a collection of various examples for viewing, etc would be top-notch fare.

I'm sure he could fill a room, even with a $25 admission fee for his trouble, and to cover his lunches!

I've never had the opportunity to attend a National, but I would think that a program of presentations (whatever you want to call them,-seminars, speeches, etc) would be a great draw.

Possible topics:
Major sets could probably have separate presentations (T206, Goudey, etc)
Alterations
Insurance, Estate & Tax issues
Panel discussion in a steel-cage-match format: Slabheads vs. RawFreaks!

just sounds like it would really add to the experience.

Denver is fine with me, I have fond memories of Denver, Boulder and Colorado Springs from my many business trips out there
throughout the 1980's.

Actually, a venue somewhat close to you would be St. Louis. I was at the 1st National there in 1982 (on my way to Denver).
It was a great show and was very convenient to the airport. I'd like to know why the Nat. committee has ignored St. Louis ?

Incidently, does Bill Vizas still have a BB card store in Denver ?
Also, does he still have a monthly show in Denver ? I used to be next to Mile-High Stadium; and, I'd schedule my trips to AT&T
to coincide with this show.

I'm disappointed at having missed the National. I've attended three times, bought hardly a thing, and had a ball every time from the comraderie, card talk, dinner, and just walking the floor at the show.

I had long-planned to attend this year, but had an unexpected recurrence of an old back injury triggered I think by an overly aggressive aerobics class. So much for rigorous exercise.

In any event, absent another bonehead play, I hope to join all in Chicago for an equally enjoyable show. Mark

Putting names with faces for Net54'ers. A lot of really, really nice people. And not one single 300-volley argument!

Seeing more vintage cards than I could ever see in one place.

Seeing 19th century cards and items I've never seen before, and would otherwise never be able to see.

Adding one item to my female-players collection.

In the end, though, what really made it great may have been one table I wandered up to, right in the very last row across from the autograph pavilion. There was a table for the AAGPBL (Girls League from the 40's). It had some items related to the movie - posters , etc. But mostly it had Dolly Niemiec behind the table.

She played in the league in the late 40's, and for the Grand Rapids Chicks no less. (Chicks. Sheesh. lol). She had a bat signed by three players that the person in front of me bought for $65. Dolly told her to bring it to any upcoming shows and she could probably get it signed by other players.

She had pre-autographed photos, but I waited a few minutes to get one personalized. Mostly I waited to say hi. What a wonderful woman. She and her husband go around to all the shows and set up near the auto pavilion. She was so pleased to chat a minute, and that I had waited for her picture and auto. It seemed like she really enjoys the shows and talking to people about what is really a unique experience - or at least a very rare experience - to have played in that league.

I figure she must be in her late 70's or so. I hope I look nearly as good and am half as sharp when I'm 80!

So I really liked everything, but that has kind of stayed in my mind and wasn't something I even expected to see there.

Mark - I'm sorry that you weren't able to be there. I was looking forward to seeing you. There were a few others there (Bruce, Ken, etc,...) that are regulars at the Chantilly show.

I have to say that this was overall the greatest sports card show that I've ever been to. I wish I could have attended the Mastro Live auction, but such is life.

I agree totally with Joann. Everyone was really very nice and many were much more shy/reserved than they come across on the board.

As I mentioned earlier, meeting many network54 forum members at the dinner was the best part of the National. (The Cleveland downtown experience was a close second )

With that in mind, several members remarked to me.....your not the "T-Rex TED".....that, I expected to meet.

but, having a store he was dealing with all sports cards. His store was situated in the antique district of Denver.

Cards, cards, cards......I found 3 T207's I was looking for and an e121 Miller Huggins. My wife collects Sarah Burnhardt post cards and she found 2 postcards she had never seen. We both had a great time and we both had good finds. Fun. Also nice to meet Leon there.
