So that's the plan, I'll be going with a friend to Dimaggio's some time next week. At North Beach we have the greatest Italian restaurants outside of Italy. Are there any other restaurants you guys would like me to test.

As I mentioned before, if you are going to be int he North Beach area, check out Cafe Sport. The place next door, I think it's Leaning Tower, has a great osso bucco and nice display vintage baseball memorabilia in the restaurant and bar.

Dimaggio's is pretty close to North Beach. If we start off at Dimaggio's then around 9:30 p.m. they'll get tired of us. At this point if some people want to they can continue the party at a number of places if they wish. Or old-timers (like me) can simply go their way.

I live in MN now, but lived downtown a block of Market street right behind the Gap store near the new US mint and Mission Delores.

Wish I could go. I really miss the city, but it got too expensive to live there with =out selling your soul to corporate America.

Brian, how did Cafe Sport get so pricey? Do they still have the carved up wooden booths, or did they totally renovate the place? Although I can see that raising prices wouldn't really hurt business since even in the 90s, there was a line to get in every night. Is the place still owned by Antonio? Can't remember his last name

Whilst the new "DiMaggio's" in North Beach is different than the one that used to be in Fisherman's Barf, we find it to be commensurate with our tastes. It is owned by the same group who owns McCovey's and Big Crosby's in Walnut Creek. It is very nice, but on the expensive side.

There's nearby Bocce Cafe, which isn't expensive and has good food. Whilst North Beach Pizza is also good, we find that parking sucks anywhere in North Beach.

There's also Momo's across from AT&T Park, as well as Paragon, which is a stone's throw. Whilst there is a night game June 30, it could be fun anyway, especially if you meet after first-pitch and since this is a baseball card geek-fest.

Maybe I'm flakey, but more likely the adjective "expensive" got my attention. I liked the old Dimaggio's because it was reasonable and I doubt that the new Dimaggio's would be comparable.

On the other hand, I've gone to Bocce Cafe a number of times and feel comfortable with both the quality and the price. Are there any strong objections to changing the venue to the Bocce Cafe.

The good thing about this thread is that we've covered about all the good eating places in SF.

Whilst they used to not take reservations, it's worth checking into. There are plenty of bars in which to mark time after checking in and coming back to collect your table.

Guys if you’re going to eat in North Beach do you want to eat in a mediocre place?
Why not step up and do it all? There are no less than five restaurants within 200 yards of each mentioned above that are way nicer, have much better food and valet parking! You guys know San Francisco is a parking garage with no place to park right? And in North Beach of all places! But then, it won’t matter where you eat if Vesuvio’s is on the agenda afterwards! I love sitting upstairs looking out the stain glass windows over looking Kerouac Alley where sex is free and so is hippy lettuce. And if you know the place as soon as it gets dark and they roll the projector showing scenes from the 1906 earthquake on the walls of the bar for hours while you drink Anchorsteam and Guinness dark on tap! Yee haw! Isn’t that a site for a drunken sailor to remember in fondness! The Nam King is right there! You can yell in there and no one will care!

Jay,the Cafe'Sport has never been cheap! The Chappino there was $35 in 1987!
though excellenta on the Italian food,the place is expensive and yes,they still have the carved wood tables.

I don't recall it being that expensive. then again, back then, I was making huge money so I never really worried about how much a restaurant cost.

Parking in NB is easy if you know where to look I never had a problem parking a limo, let alone personal vehicle.

Guys, we got plenty of time to decide, so let's open up the discussion for an appropriate restaurant. So far, we have 3 places that have been mentioned: Lefty's, Dimaggio's, and Bocce Cafe.

Bocca is the best of the three choices if you must.

There is only 300 restaurants within a square block of each of these to investigate. peter,go eat aT each over the next two months and get back to us.

The problem is when you work in downtown SF you initially go to different restaurants because that's one of the joys of SF. But after a while you will only go to a few because you feel comfortable there for whatever reasons. Maybe you know your going to run into your friends.

Or perhaps, it's a place you can avoid some people. Whatever, I'm sure you understand.

I've tried all 3 of the restaurants mentioned and I like Bocce the best, but if you have other specific suggestions let me know.

I've been to a Shalamar in Fremont, CA but if there's one in SF, I don't know where that is. Indian food is okay, but we need to find a place where most of us can agree to.

My son Nick who lives in SF took me and the Missus to Shalamar few years back. Long lines out the door, quite the popular place. The food was inedible. Nor am I much for eating on formica tables. out of 3.

Sunday Champagne Brunch at the Fairmont is a great deal. I'm up for it if others want to do it. You get a great view of the City and great seafood as well as champagne.

We could meet late on Sunday morning.

I've been to Le Colonial. Excellent, but no view. If you guys want to stick with Saturday night let's go to Le Colonial, if you would prefer late Sunday a.m., then try Fairmont Brunch.

Guys,

Here's my tentative proposal. It's a gorgeous spring day here in SF. Sunday, June 31, 2007 at the top of the world famous Fairmont for champagne brunch at 11:30 a.m., for those that go to church on Sunday there are numerous churchs that surround the Fairmont.

We meet after church for some socializing. I'm not sure how much it costs anymore, but I suspect it's around $20 per adult.

If you can't make it, do you have another suggestion.

First choice Saturday evening June 30.
Nice restaurant, no formica.
Italian would be my first choice of cousine.
Spouses or significant others welcome but if no one else bringing one I won't either.

I agree. As I recall from prior visits to SF and the Fairmont brunch it wasn't all that great anyway.

Looks like we're on the right track with Bocce. Let's lock it in and get a count before Brian throws us off track once more.
