As I understand from various articles, Sergio Delgado is selling a large portion of his card collection (maybe all???) to refocus on other collectibles. A lot of his collection are reasonably recent pick-ups (last couple of years).

I was the former owner of this card, and I can guarantee you that there was no hidden reserve. I lost several thousand in the sale, and received payment from Mastro shortly after the auction.

Whenever someone abruptly bails out of the hobby, there are some cards that were the last to be purchased and therefore return to the market very quickly. Two cards I sold in my November, 2006 auction are part of that group, and I can say with certainty they sold.

What are the reasons someone might give for bailing out of the hobby suddenly. Usually people who have significant collections are normally financially sound.

You've been in the hobby for a long time, what kind of reasons have you heard. The Just So Burkett is one of the hobby mainstays.

I can't speak for someone else since I did not know Mr. Delgado personally, but he may have done this as an investment, or he simply may have burned out. I know, for example, Jim Copeland planned to build a long term collection, but after a few years he lost his passion and just decided he had enough.

Like Cat said, Mr. Delgado is simply selling his collection to focus on a different type of collectible.

The Burkett card is ALREADY selling for the same amount that the current owner paid (maybe one increment less, I can't remember for sure). Is anyone else surprised by this? I don't think anyone could have missed the card last time it sold. And with both Sergio and Hal out of the market, doesn't it make sense that it should sell for less?

Your probably seeing some of the after-effects of the recent sale of the Gretzky T206-Wagner. The sale caught the eye of investors and speculators and they are bidding up the Just So Burkett.

Too bad for me, and for Andy Baran. He was justifiably disappointed in the price the first time around. But with two big rookie collectors leaving the market, I thought I might be able to pick it up for a song. I guess not.

That rookie card market is HOT HOT HOT .....I think we might all be a little naive in underestimating our little cardboard gems. There are many newer folks, with bucks, coming into the market. Almost a week doesn't go by when I don't learn about another new person coming into the market/hobby with a fair amount of disposable income. And the prices keep spiraling up (especially on the rare stuff)....regards

Hal, I didn't mean to imply that you were permanently gone. Only that you weren't bidding in the current auctions. I wouldn't be surprised if you held some stuff back and kept it for yourself.
