I was banking on you, if anyone, to tell me the set. I discovered this Foxx the other day
in a stack of stuff that I had not looked at in at least 20 years.

Can't tell you what set he is but he does look very young so would put the card in the 20's.

I was thinking packaging much like Paul, the ink on top and right edges suggests more stock once attached, and unlikely to be a strip card where some of the cards are colorized but others just black and white......matchbook maybe?

Super cool and intense image though, reminds me of my 21 Oxford with large portrature and grainy mood picture.

I think that it is cut from a 1940s issue of "Complete Baseball" magazine, or similar type magazine.

1st....to answer your 2 questions....it is on grayish cardboard thicker than the 1930's matchbook I have shown here.

2nd....the hint of reddish color in the upper left corner is from whatever card (or picture) was printed above Mr Foxx.

FRANK, you'll appreciate this....this mid-'30s MB of VAN LINGLE MUNGO....is there a name in BB more "lyrical" than this ?

I collect Foxx "things". I've got hundreds of cards and photos. My best guesstimate is that the photo is from about 1928. Maybe 29. I've not seen this item anywhere. Probably never will again. Neat picture of the "man".

I only included this MB in this scan for comparison purposes. I did not mean to imply that it was printed on an
MB cover. The thicker cardboard that the Foxx is printed on suggests that this card is from something else.

Its never been seen, there are a few of us "type card collectors" here that specialize in these unknown/uncataloged cinderella cards.

I have pictures of a couple dozen different "unknowns".

To me this is the most interesting post of the last month. Because these unknown cards are what I like best. Now if we could find another from this series?

I too am a type card collector, though i may not have a vast collection akin to Leon and others, im quite familer with a lot of issues, and ive never seen this card before, or any card in the same format. I too find this very interesting, there's nothing better then someone starting a post about a card they found that no one can identify imo!

You guys really amaze me.....20 (or so) years ago I stashed this card into my "no big deal" pile along with
miscellaneous cards such as a Wilt Chamberlain (1961) Fleer rookie, some small uncatalogued cards of Evers,
Johnson, Matty, Cyoung, E-cards, and many other such cards, that in the early 1980's did not generate
much interest.

Well, recently I must say, I have had some surprising results in re-discovering these cards. Anyhow, I hope
some one here can figure out this "gem".

you said the back was the same grey cardboard as the front grey?
my guess is that it's a cutout from a game box since the back is grey and there seems to be color above, just a guess.

Without any kind of number, or team, or trademark, or anything it's kind of hard to say if this was from a set or cut from some kind of promotional item. Maybe just cut from some kind of box. I have seen items such as this (not this exact type) and they were not identifiable. Sometimes you just have to go with "cinderella" card. Cool item....or card

Judging from the thickness of the cardboard, I am inclined to agree with you, that this card
was cut from a box. However, this card does not appear to me to be hand cut....upon close
observation, all sides are indicative of a factory cut.

For the present, this card will have to remain a real mystery. I do not think it is unique, and
eventually someone will identify it.

Ted, I posted the card to the knowlegeable vintage bb game board at yahoo. Nothing definitive so far, but one fellow suggested a c1935 Jimmie Foxx Game by Diamond Toys (which has yet to be discovered). Hold onto it.

Thanks for your effort in trying to get to the source of this card.

1935 is near the end of Jimmy playing with the A's....I think it was that year (or 1936) when
he was traded to Boston.

And, have no fear, I've has this card for 20 - 25 years and I'm not going to part with it now.

Its not from a "known set". I havent seen it in 25+ years of looking for unusual stuff.

IMO I believe it is a card of some type, not cut from a game box. But I have no proof. The cut looks machine and the design and size is consistant with a card. Ted if you get a chance sometime can you post a picture of the back?

The texture/grain of the card back also suggests the "not a card" theory.

It certainly looks as if the back was not meant to be seen, as in a display/POS item or some kind of box lid.

I know that Foxx advertised for Life Cereal, but it was closer to the end of his career with Boston.

Unless they produced some really sturdy cereal boxes back in the '30s than in recent years,
I am not so sure that it was cut from one. As I noted the thickness of this cardboard is
equal to a 1933 Goudey card stock.

On 2nd thought, though, I used to have a collection of BB stars on 1930's Wheaties boxes,
and I do recall they were pretty thick cardboard.

Nice 1936 Pin. It was was a product called "Life Bread". Not a cereal. I've got one graded a 5 by PSA. They turn up quite often. But I collect all things Foxx. Still a nice item.

This card is one piece of thick cardboard, upon which Foxx's picture is printed.
Under magnification, I see no lamination of any kind.

where they may have had a couple baseball players
on the boxx listed for eye appeal so people would

1927 Honey Boy is 1 5/8 by 2 3/8 and has a similar format/design. Could this be a trimmed, blankbacked 'chase' card not unlike the peckinpaugh card from the Holland Winnipeg set? Someone suggested that the photo of Foxx looks circa 1928, so maybe it is some sort of obscure Canadian issue or proof of an uncirculated issue from the same producers..?

Sorry Ted, I gave it a shot. The knowledgeable old BB Games board were even stumped. One fellow suggested a W517 They move at a snails pace there, so there's still hope.

I'm drifting toward an old Wheaties, Mapo etc. or possibly a Double Crunch (Seinfeld) back.
