what's the appeal of miscuts, color variations, etc.?

I saw the other thread about pickups for the year of cards with variations, and it made me want to post a question I've had for awhile. For those of you who are active collectors of miscuts, odd color variations, ghost images, etc., etc., would you mind sharing what the appeal is of these cards? Personally, I don't have much interest in them. If I got one in a lot of cards, depending on what the variation is, and how interesting it was, I might keep it. But more likely, I'd sell it to a collector who looks for these sort of cards and I'd use the profit to further the completion of my fledgling T206 set. And I doubt that I'd ever pay a premium for such a card.

I hope no one takes this as an attack on your collecting habits. It's simply a genuine curiosity on my part as to why people find these cards so appealing. I have a few ideas as to why, but I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Unique, Unusual, and Rare.

How many T206 Orange-yellow Cobbs are out there.... maybe a 1/2 dozen, Red ones .... couple thousand.

Color variation = factory issued

Color error = missing color during the printing process

Some are rare, some are scarce, some are both or neither. By and large, there's a fairly finite market for a lot of this stuff. They're very cool if you plan on keeping them in your collection. If not, you are (generally) disappointed in what you get when you try to sell, considering how rare some of these issues might be.

Ditto on Adam's point.

I like to think that they survived far less than regularly printed cards and rarely available in the "market" so to speak; as many fell to the printer's eyes and were eventually disposed of or maybe past collector's dislike of the appearance of the card had them slowly "dissolve".

I have some scrap-like (badly miscut) E90-3's, a blankback proof-like T207 (lacking gloss on front), a really off-set T207 (blue print of NY logo is in the foreground), a badly off-register R300 Geo. Miller and a E92 Dockman/Menagerie wrongback...pretty unique, in my opinion.

The cards may not have a high value in the guides, but then again, the guides are usually off anyways.

It's funny how 20 years ago those miscut and odd colored cards were like rejects. Nobody cared too much for them. Give me the redest red, the greenest green and the darkest blue. Holy crap, the names on top, not at the bottom, I don't want that thing...

It's kind of like overprints... I don't want that card it's got a stamp on it... wow, if we only knew then what we know now...

I don't normally collect miscut cards, but I thought this was a neat one. I'm waiting for it in the mail right now. I looked at the t206museum website and theres no polar bear back miscut card in their gallery

Can anyone put a value on it ? The guy charged me a rediculous amount of money for insurance with a tracking number... but since it was around Christmas, I wasn't going to take any chances of it getting lost with the millions of packages being mailed.

This Aaron card was my first vintage purchase back around middle/late 2000. Ok, so vintage to me back then meant pre-1970, but it was the beginning of moving ever back in time and appreciating early cardboard and baseball history. I was looking to put together a collection of cards for an auction house to sell, came across this card, and realized just how special it seemed to me as a pure mistake and rarity. $70, and it quickly went into the 'personal' not for sale pile and began my vintage collecting affair.

Ps. I have no other color or other variations in my collection - because my collection requires no duplication of issue, player, or variation. I still like to look at others and think they're super cool, I just don't want to expand my collecting perameters for love of time or money.
