I never would believe that many people would take their lives like that...Surprised not more from the 30's...

I don't think it's a dumb thread. Poor taste and tacky, probably; disrespectful, possibly, but not dumb.

When I contributed my Pulliam card, I figured it highly unlikely that any relative of his would read the thread and take offense. It occurs to me, however, that it's quite possible some of our forum members or readers may have suffered personal loss through suicide, or may have attempted it themselves, and that this topic could cause them pain. For that I am sorry, and I by no means intended to minimize the problems that others have faced.

I do believe these men deserve to be remembered, and not ignored simply because of the way they met their Maker. I would hope that posters could include a link, antecdote or statistical blurb to go with any images. For my part, I always found Pulliam to be an interesting man who helped keep MLB together in the early volatile years when the AL and NL were being asked to coexist. I'm sure many of you know about him, but here's a link with a brief profile:

I find nothing wrong with this topic at all. (not intended toward Chris) but wanting to be sensative or politically correct is admirable, but the most strong desire to be so can only offset human interest and curiosity into this subject to a very limited degree. Every person in the word is at least slightly interested in the topic of death. That is why we ALL slow down to look at traffic accidents, we ALL would rather own a baseball card of Willard Herschberger than Shanty Hogan, We ALL would rather read a rivoting artcile on Marty Bergan than a boring biography of common 19th century backup etc. Shows like CSI are popular for a reason, we have a natural human curiosity and slightly morbid fascination toward death because the process of taking your own life and what is beyond it are unknown and the unknown always intrigues us. I think it also has the opposite effect of "being disrespectful". I find myself very sympathetic for the problems these men had and am so thankful I live in a society where mental and physical illnesses can be treated so much easier.

I think starting a thread posting all sorts of Donnie Moore pictures would be slightly distasteful because there are thousands of people who knew him that might stumble on this forum. Posting pictures and retelling stories of men who were famous figures in America and died in interesting ways and did so over a half century ago is nothing more than an interresting topic for discussion.

This topic is perverse. You are certainly free to talk about it, and I am certainly not offended but it's perverse.

One poster said we ALL have a natural curiosity or fascination of death. I would like to respond with two points: 1) We ALL don't, and 2) That doesn't make it right.

Why we are not permitted to talk about politics and religion, but are permitted to talk about the past ball players who committed suicide is something I have a hard time understanding.

'Unknown' suicide? How can someone determine you killed yourself, but not know how?

I think an equally morbid, but interesting corollary would be to list the ones who killed themselves as the result of a baseball play. Donnie Moore came to mind, but since he killed his wife first (which I didn't realize), maybe it was something else.

Death is always interesting - it happens to all of us and unless we give it a proper amount of thought, it's impossible to live our lives to their fullest. JMO

If memory serves, not only did he shoot his wife first, he did the 2 fatal shootings in front of his kids
