Well it's very slightly OT on the Bob S scale, anyway.

I've got a '47 Williams Homoginized Bond Bread in a Mint Co. slab (a 9, and it looks it)

Most of us know of the illegal reprinting of the square corner versions of this set, which I believe was in conjunction with slabbing by PRO grading

(disclaimer ...I'm not publicly accusing or singling out PRO here, it's just what I seem to remember).

I'm curious if anyone knows if Mint Co. (whoever they are...LOL) was associated with this fiasco, and also if any of the major graders will grade this set.(the square cards, ie.)

BTW, I took my lazy hat off and googled MINT Co., and yes indeed they are alive and well. Well, alive, anyway...oops, they're in FL, so that raises the FL "bucketshop" flag . At least it wasn't on the "Lauderdale Mile", but Brandon FL might be a suburb. LOL

that David Festberg was selling the square corners in the late 80's and early 90's. I never heard that they were "illegal" but had always thought they were a warehouse find. I've not been on the board long enough to know whether that was ever discussed and disproven.

I believe it was such a large find that there was a collector who ran regular ads in SCD where you could buy a near set for $99 (which included Robinson, Louis and Williams). There was a short article in Sports Illustrated about how there were about 1200 near sets which were found in mint condition. Kind of a shame that people seem to be under the impression the square cornered cards are fakes, but these cards are from 1947.

Yes, I was aware of the NY find.

But I was referring to the SCD investigation in 2003....btw,it was Gem grading, not Pro mentioned in that circumstance.
