If they have 200 baseball tobacco cards and expect to get $50,000, that's $250 a card. They better all be hall of famers, which would be a pretty good trick at that. Still a cool way to find a little stash of free money.

actually, the article says the cards could be worth up to $50k, but still overly optimistic.

this is close to home and yes ....i will be there tommorrow.

I talked to the family and I talked to the auctioneer, who by the way is a comic expert of sorts and doesn't know that much about cards. He did know about a few Ruths and the 33 Lajoie Goudey.

The issue that I dont understand is for instance lot72 (5) Chance portraits...ok, i asked to be sure....are all to be auctioned as 1 group ?...he said ,the highest bidder will get one, then the rest will all go to the underbidders and you will have to state which one that you want,haa?
I said, so if I want a particular one and Iam outbid on that as long as my bid is higher on any of the other ones ,I will get one of the others as long as it is higher than anyone elses....haa?

I said that's silly and doesn't make sense and it surely doesnt seem that that would be best interest of the consignor. He said that it works.

I'll be there early enough to be explained to better than that !

Dan, this standard estate sale auction practice. The way it works if that they sell off bunch of radio. The high bidder gets his choice of the lot at the price he bids. He can take one or he can take the whole lot at the price he bid per item.

So let's use the lot in this acution, 5 Chance portraits. If the higher bid is $100, he can take as many of the cards from the lot for $100 per card. So if he wants just one, he picks which one he wants and pays $100. If he wants 2, he chooses the 2 he wants and pays #200, etc.

Well I went to this auction and here are my impressions. The outfit that ran the auction seemed to be about a fly by night as you could get. They had the cards to auction however many were not ex+ as described. Many had what seemed to be mildew on them. These were found in a box in a basement after all. They did not disclose that employees would be bidding on behalf of people. Somone asked them about that and the auctioneer got quite nervous and glossed over it. One Joe Tinker was taken during viewing. It caused someone to get stuck with somethig they did not want. This was another issue that made the auctioneer a little nervous. The prices were crazy. There were some McGraws and Jennings that has paper missing on the front that went for $100+ closer to $200 actualy.

They had A LOT of new stuff there that they forced people to sit through. The room was ready to riot I think if they would of went long periods auctioning that stuff. However, I will say all of the publicity around Detroit here that was generated did get the owners a nice chunk of change but no $50,000.

All in all it was quite odd but the hotel had a nice restaurant.

well it wasnt what it was cracked up to be !

Though I went there with an opened mind , I ended up not letting my knowledge spoil it for someone else. The list stated that most of the cards would grade PSA 5-7 with some 8's and some 4's. Well...nothing close to an 8 let alone a 6.

If anyone on this board would have consigned, you would have made a fortune. Most of the lots were commons at the average of vg -vgx and were getting 45-70 each, couldn't believe it.

I ended up congratulating the couple for there find and it would have been nice for anyone of us as well. The 2 Cobbs (both Bat off) went for 1150.00 each as the buyer took both in one lot for his max price. The first was a nice vgx and the 2nd vg.

I did spend 2400 and bought the box that the cards were found in for 75.00. Some of the proceeds were going to St. Judes hospital which I found really nice.

I got 4 Joss- 2 vgx and 2 ex for 540.00 a Cy Young glove 475.00 in a strong vgx.
Bought some commons ...some classier ones , like the Camnitz and Abbatichio w/ ther striped shirts, I like those and the nicest card a exmt Willis throw for 100. The best deal a Kleinow catch really really cheap in EX.

I did find an ebayer there, Mark Iredonko, though I didnt find him too personable. He acted quite snooty, not even distinguishable and in a Mickey Mouse club jacket to boot !....oh well, there is no law that someone has to be kind, is there ?...and no one owes me any favors .

I will still try to meet as many of you's old and new and continue to enjoy this hobby. There is a bunch of great people here and I hope that the family type ambience continues to grow .

I had alot of fun and thought I would share with you all.

Bemis is a pretty scarce E90-1 and if it was in vg/ex condition that $288.00 is actually a very good price.

Did you happen to find out what the total was on all of the cards? The article mentioned $50K. I'm guessing it was much less than this.

Hey Judge,

12800.00 was the final tally. My wife kept track and I did a quick math gig for ya.

The first card a t205 Walter Johnson in gvg 925.00!!!!

Leever in vg went for 140.00 and was misspronounced as Leeves
G.Bell in vgx went for 130.00...wowie!!!!

Fred is was alot of fun and a first time for me at a live bidding auction.

The couple were full of smiles the whole time , a tad nervous , but gleeming.

Iam still glad that a bit went to St.Judes Childrens Hospital, so I did a little extra but careful bidding in regards to that .My wife nudged me for some of that reason and to outbid purposly a bidder who wasnt cutting me any slack on a few issues.

Now about that box, well...it was musty and mildewy...did shed some blue from the moist blue velvet finish and it stunk !


I loudly stated that and sniffed it front of everyone to add a little fun to the auction and I did get a full house applaud as another and I were going at it and of course , I won it.
