I picked this Cabinet up on Ebay tonight and he has what looks like to me a Position Pin on his cap. I was wondering if it is an 1890's Position Pin and if so, what position this guy played. |

Its one of the outfield positions. Looks like the writing along the left side is too long to say left or right. I'd say he played center field. |

Actually upon closer inspection the "centre" on the pin is low on the left side. In your photo the writing looks higher. I dont know if its left, center, or right but is definitely an outfield pin. |

Thanks Brock, I thought it was a position pin but didn't know for sure. When I get it, I should be able to tell which outfield position it is. |

Nice pickup Jerry...I watched that auction without seriously considering it...I just like to add 19th century photos to my watchlist. |

Anybody know how long the position player pins were issued? A few months ago I was looking through some old auction catalogs and ran across a lot with the pins still attached to the original sales board and I believe the board was dated 1910. I will post a scan of the catalog pic when I have time. |

There are many different types of the celluloid position pins. I would guess they were manufactured in one form or another from about 1896-1920. I've seen just straight up position pins and I've seen them with advertising for different companies. |
