Just looking at the scan of the t206s, I'd have to guess that if these cards were legit, that the set offered would have to be worth far more than $13k. You also have to wonder about the legitimacy of the set since he says the set is missing the Big 3 with no mention of of the Doyle card. How do amass a set like this over the past 12 years and not not know anything about the Doyle card?

The Topps set are all prolly legit, but if all these cards are legit, you could make so much more money consigning to Mastro or someone else. A t206 set of that quality would be centrpiece for just about any auction.

Here's an example that piqued my interest (also applies to the Ruth). Now maybe his definition of 'years' is different that mine and that is the only problem. He says he's owned the Gehrig autographed 1933 Goudey "for years." Yet, the image is apparently lifted straight from the Dec 2000 Ron Oser auction catalog siting beside me as I type. Further, his 'Buy it Now' price for this card is $1,000 lower than Oser's minimum bid (God knows what the realized price was).

Perhaps the definition of 'years' can be reasonably explained away, perhaps as mere embelishment. However, no one will ever convince me that someone who owns a $15,000 card (example of price, as I don't know the exact value) and who knows it's worth that much, will offer it for $4,000. Being 'hard up for money' doesn't mean selling a $15,000 card for $4,000, it means selling it for $15,000.

Sure has a lot of the "buyer beware" evidence. Could be legit...but...he hasn't had any feeback on ebay since over a year ago (last one was October of 2002) and now he is dumping a whole bunch of big dollar items. Somebody might want to drive by his house and see if the luggage is on the porch and the car is running. Might be making for a quick getaway!

In the t206 set auction, can anybody name the book the scan came from?

I'm 90% certain that it is from a book (first because it looks familiar, and second because the bending of the image on the left side looks very much like the way pages roll-bend when you try to flatten a book on, say, a scanner), but I can't for the life of me think where I've seen it before.

but with regard to the T206 near set, i think you hit the nail on the head about the "book remark." Having made scans before of book pages (to show copyright pages or pictures) I'd say the "bending of the images" on the left side looks highly suspicious. I would want to see individual scans, front and back, of the HOFers before bidding. Everything might be on the up and up but I would want more proof.

One of the stranger, more intresting quotes used in several of his descriptions is: " I would have to assume that they might be a few miscut or trimmed cards as I have not had any of them graded by any company."

One should wonder about an 'experienced collector' who needs the help of a grading company to tell him whether or not he owns miscut cards.

I clicked on the top link and saw the Gehrig signed 1933 Goudey card... That's when I knew something was wrong... This SAME card was up for auction about March of this year. How do I know - because I was an underbidder on it... Furthmore, the fact the description states he has owned this card for years makes me even more suspicious...

I do. If my memory serves me correctly, wasn't it glued to one of the first few pages of a 1945 football guide and offered on eBay last April?

Curiously, the seller writes, "it is still glued to the scrapbook page I purchased it in." Why didn't he mention that it was in a football periodical? I would think that a well-worded email could determine whether the seller is being truthful about the origin of this card.

Why would you offer a near set for sale with dupes of the Chance portrait right in your scan. it is curious if the picture came from a book why are so many of the cards trimmed? Not that I think that this is legitbut even the socalled scan sure does offer up alot of questions.

What chance is there that he would get shutdown before someone takes a big hit and bids on his stuff and gets stuck with nothing. What does ebay do, go send someone to his home and make sure he has all that he says he has?

This gets so old, I am just glad I am connected to the board to help in these situations. I think it is important we continue list these bogus auctions here.

You're lucky you lost the auction on the Gehrig. The Ruth signature is horrendous. "Babe" MISSPELLED his last name? Take another look. He crossed the 'h' with an "umbrella"-top-shaped slash? Not only that but the rest of the formation of lettering is incorrect yet consistant with the same signer's characteristics on the Gehrig (angle, formation, proportion).

I'd go as far as to say that I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if that Ruth were signed with a felt, thin tip, black marking pen, an implement that was unavailable during Ruth's lifetime.

I think the guy selling the reprints i nthe above link I posted needs alittle more encouragement that he actually has reprints will a few of our fine board members send him a note that he is selling reprints. He seems to think they are real because theey have copyrights.

I sent this email to the seller just out of morbid curiosity.

“Could you send me a couple of close up scans of the stars front and back.I would love to see a clear picture before I bid. I am in the market for a
complete T206 set.”

He responds with this email and photos enjoy. Seller is now conveniently not selling any more items. I guess it was a false alarm on the baby.

Julie, I beleive the contention is that the seller took a digital picture of an auction catalog, and that the bend is not the cards but the inside of the catalog page.

I don't even think these are the proper backs for the cards. For one thing the background of the scan is a differrent color, Why? The top row of cards has different corner wear on the backs than front.

I think what needs to be asked of this guy is scans of specific commons and see what he comes up with.

I did ask for a scan of one card in particular Dutch Revelle And I got this bunch. It's a shame too whrn I got this wonderful set for 13,000. I was going give everyone on the board one or two cards from the set. Damn crooked sellers!
