...cracking open a PSA "1" that appears to be graded so based on the technical definition. It's a HOFer. The back has some staining and the card does have a crease (however not overt) but the corners and edges etc. look pretty good making the card ungraded a VG-VG+ (from my short 25+ years collecting) and I would've guessed a PSA 3 at least. The worst nightmares get a "1" and this isn't even close. If I knew it was coming back a 1-2, I wouldn't have paid to have it done. Have any of you had this experience. It seems like the opposite extreme of the grading. I don't think breaking it out could hurt.

There was a GAI 2 Gypsy Queeen Pud Galvin that went for about $2000 in the Sports Cards Plus Auction. And I'm sure Wayne Varner had no trouble getting rid of his 19th century horde, graded low becasuse of back damage, last month.

It's your choice, as there are obvious pros and cons. As you feel the grade is off, the holder essentially works as a grade of 'authentic.' .... To me, it would all come down to how it would effect the sell price. If I thought the grade was bad (high or low), I would likely remove the card.

If the grade is bad whether too high or too low, I think the any card should be removed from the holder. I'm talking about bad grading, not the typical bellyaching over 6 versus a 7. I don't see how bad grades, no matter how official and registered, is a benifit to the hobby. This is for the same reason that a counterfeit should be removed from the holder asap.

I'd break it out of its holder. I bought a PSA 1 Cracker Jack Walter Johnson from Teletrade that was absolutely beautiful. It had two tiny white chips in the red background, almost unnoticeable. I guess PSA thought they were staple holes. When I broke it out, it was clear there was just the tiniest bit of ink missing. It's one of my favorite cards and would probably be graded Ex-Mt by any seller. If I wanted to sell it, I could sell it for more now than when it was in the holder. So I don't see any benefit to the holder.

...as I have said before, I'm not impressed with SGC and PSA trying to prove "who can be the toughest" and I think most of their grades the last couple years have been low by a half or full grade. I base that ONLY on their own published scales and descriptions of each class within the scale. I also base it on cards that each co. graded some years back (under the SAME criteria) that are not consistent with their grading today...in many cases, a full point difference. I'd crack it out. Send it to someone else. I don't use PSA or SGC anymore.
