Cy Young portraits are some of the best.
Cool painting, though I am more of a realism person.

love both of these cards guys -- the horner portrait is iconic and the way its translated into both the t206 and the e90-1 makes both of them some of my favorite cards for sure. love the retirado as well which interprets another one of those great + iconic cy images against that light blue background

That’s a very cool artwork. Well done
Here are three different very early Young poses, and one duplicate - the cabinet was later used on a pin. Last edited by Rhotchkiss; 04-28-2025 at 06:28 PM. |

you own all of these? these are SERIOUS grails. would love to get one of cy's cabinets one day. its wild to see him so young right? (no pun intended) -- most of the cultural images we have of cy depict him as the 'grand old man' on his way out of the game. he spent such a large portion of his career in the time before there was major photojournalistic coverage of the sport. |

Yes, they are mine. The problem with collecting Cy Young is that the bulk of his career was during a time when few baseball items, and no cards, were produced and what does exist is so rare and fragile.

that's pretty crazy to have these! you must be really very happy. this is a big part of why to me historically he exists similar to satchel paige as a myth and a memory -- it becomes a question of documentation as illumination. we have to work with stories, news clippings; piecing together history with players like cy becomes a question of illuminating the darkness of what was with what little we know or don't know about the truth of his times to cast his figure into clarity |

I wonder why Cy wasn't included in the 1895 N300 Mayo set.

That might be my favorite card in the hobby, Corey. I like it more than the FBH Kelly. Thanks for sharing the pic and hope all is well your way.

This E98 card is a non-portrait of a non-Cy Young.

really great cards and artifacts guys. great to compile an archive of sorts on the thread to celebrate cy in the early days of his career. there's so much to say about the impression he left upon the sport.
so many know him just from the name on the award but uncovering historically the nature of his character and just how massive his achievements really are puts him in perspective as a figure who played in what are essentially two fundamentally different eras of the sport and excelled beyond what we can conceive of in a modern context in both of them. |

My favorite Cy Young stat is that he completed 749 of the 815 games he started, which works out to 91.9%.

its something that is near impossible to fathom in a modern context. i'm convinced its a big part of why there's a large gap of relating him over a century later to today's game and our conceptions and standards of baseball. can only imagine having the ability to watch today's game then be able to go back and watch him pitch a season. you'd have to completely rework your conception of what baseball is and what is possible within that framework. part of what makes him and his place in history so utterly remarkable. |
