Day 20 – 20 January 2024
Today, I provide an assortment of older pins and buttons. You’ll notice some from the World Series, early 1950s, Bomb em Birds large and small, a concessioner (774) pin, and others. I really like the top three Orioles Hartzell Bird, Spirit of 66 and Year of the Bird examples. The 1966 Charge / WS larger button is nice. Towards the bottom, the World Champs/Black and Decker Angry Bird is pretty cool and rare. |

Charlie,
Nice looking group of pins. I also see a 1960 Fox Cites pin in the mix. Do you collect minor league pins too? I don't actively collect pins, but pick them up when I see ones I think are cool. Translation: I somehow find I have plenty of pins in my collection accumulated over the years. Here's a couple of my favorite Frank Robinson pins from Blue Ribbon Bread. Hi, Alan. I am not an expert on all the minor league teams / affiliates but have a few. Would love to find more. Will show another one next post. I love the pins. I have one of the two Frank’s. Thanks for showing.

Day 21 – 21 January 2024
It is always fun finding things from Brooks’ minor league days. Below is an example of his time in York, PA with the White Roses. I believe this pin is from his 1955 season. The other pin is from 1960 Fox Cities Foxes, which was Boog’s 2nd year in professional baseball. |

Day 22 – 22 January 2024
Finally, my last pin / button day ends with a bang. I have consolidated all of my Brooks pins / buttons. You will see the 1959 PM10, 1969 MLB, his hall of fame button, small 1969 MLB red pin, #5Brooks pin, some reprints, and his hall of fame 1983 pin and charm with Alston, Kell, Marichal and Brooks. Hope you enjoyed the pins and buttons. |

I know an unopened box of 1963 Jello with a Brooks Robinson card on the back recently sold. While that may be the only one known unopened of all the thousands of Brooks boxes that were produced, here is a true 1 of 1.
Shown for your viewing pleasure is an original Jello camera ready production art for the Jello baseball set with the Brooks Robinson. I have similar ones for Post Baseball as well Wording from an old auction listing says: Phenomenal one-of-a-kind copy art poster board lay-outs used in the production of the 1963 JELL-O gelatin baseball card promotion. Each illustration board is impeccably preserved in the original hard cover folio and identifies the gelatin package(s) on which each card is to appear, while the paste-up sheets reflect General Foods art department proofing notations. Each illustration board and individual card lay-out is oversized in comparison to standard box panel and card dimensions, measuring approximately 5" X 3?." Unlike the 1963 Post cereal poster board lay-outs, the JELL-O mock-ups are aligned in 2 columns of 4 cards (total of 😎 for the 3 ounce packages, and 3 columns of 3 cards (total of 9) for the 6 ounce packages. These illustration boards were then sent to rotogravure printers to produce the plates that ultimately yielded the individual JELL-O packages on the grocer's shelf. Original Kodachrome prints of players appearing in the set, which feature the photography of Art Shay. Advanced collectors will also marvel at the photograph variations attendant to cropping of the prints and placement of the photos within the overlay sheets.

Day 23 – 23 January 2024
For the next several days I will discuss and show the different years Bazooka included Brooks Robinson on their “boxes.” I know the Bazooka’s have been discussed here before but I have added a few and thought the conversation would be fun and some of you might have some variations and proofs to show. First up is 1963. This was the first year Brooks appeared on a box with Bazooka. The previous years (1959, 1960, 1961 and 1962) did not include Brooks. Below is the 1963 complete box with White and Herbert, panel and hand cut card. Bazooka published 12 different 3 player boxes in 1963. The panel and hand cut card are easier to find than the box but generally, these are tough to come across given the player collectors and the bazooka collectors. The box is almost impossible to find. |

Day 24 – 24 January 2024
Brooks again appeared on the 1964 Bazooka Box. Like the 1963 box, this box is impossible to find. I found this one with the 1964 sticker inserts affixed to the back of the box and had to carefully remove them before PSA would grade the box. Bazooka made 12 x 3 player boxes in 1964. Below is the Complete Box with Ellsworth and Herbert, Panel and hand cut card. Additionally, unique to 1964, Bazooka not only included gum but they included 10 stamps. These stamps came in 10 player panels. Brooks appears on the #3 panel with Yaz and Clemente. Today, I am showing the 10 player panel, single stamp and two player panel with Pepitone. Finding the single stamp is easy and affordable. The 10 player panel is very hard to find and expensive. |

Day 25 – 25 January 2024
Brooks appeared on a box again in 1965. I am not in possession of a 1965 box. I have never seen a complete 1965 box but always looking. If you have one collecting dust, keep me in mind. I do have a panel with Santo and Howard. The cards are easier to find than the panels. 1965 included 12 different 3 player panels. |

Day 26 – 26 January 2024
In 1966, Brooks appears on a box with Wynn and Torre. Below is just the box. I will cover the panel and hand cut card tomorrow because PSA grades the panel and card as 1966/67 because you cannot differentiate the cards and panels when cut from the box. The 1966 and 1967 boxes display the same players but on the back of the 1966 box, Koufax appears in a small picture. 1966 included 16 different 3 player boxes. |

Day 27 - 27 – 27 January 2024
In 1967, Brooks appears with the same players as 1966, but on the back of the box, there is a smaller picture of Mantle. Appearing with Brooks is Torre and Wynn. The single card and panel are provided below. I am also showing a ungraded box. PSA incorrectly graded one of the panels as 1967. 1967 included 16 different 3 player boxes. |

Day 28 – 28 January 2024
In 1968, Bazooka changed things up and created a 5 player box featuring one player on the box providing “Tipps from the Topps.” There are 15 different boxes in 1968. Below, I show the complete box (Brooks appears on the back), a complete panel, the Tipps from the Topps portion with Brooks and a hand cut card of Brooks. I also provide a booklet that Bazooka provided with a picture inside of all the players appearing the 15 Tipps section of the boxes. Thes are very difficult to find in any of the above variations and pricey. |

Day 29 – 29 January 2024
In 1971, Brooks appeared on his final playing day Bazooka box. In 1971 Bazooka had the regular box without a number under the player’s picture and a test run of numbered panel. The boxes without numbers included 16 different player boxes as did the numbered test panels. I have a complete set of the unnumbered boxes. All variations are provided below (numbered panel, numbered hand cut card, no number box, no number panel and no number hand cut card). That concludes my update on Bazooka’s. |

Day 30 – 30 January 2024
Hope you enjoyed last weeks Bazooka updates. This week I would like to share some of my many signs from Memorial Stadium, city of Baltimore or newspaper advertiser. Some will relate to Brooks Robinson directly while others indirectly. My first sign is the iconic directional metal sign to Memorial Stadium used on the streets of Baltimore providing directions to the stadium. This sign is metal with orange, white and green colors measuring 24 inches x 30 inches. The detail or stadium representation is very nice. This sign is very popular and rarely available. This particular sign is very expensive if you can find one. |

Day 31 – 31 January 2024
Today I am sharing a picture of the 1970 Eastern Division Champions and American League Champion Baltimore Orioles Memorial Stadium direction sign. The sign is bright yellow with the Oriole bird holding a bat tipping his cap. The sign has blue font for “Memorial Stadium.” I am guessing these signs were randomly placed on telephone poles as a temporary sign for traffic. This sign, has a hole / damage on the top “O” in Memorial that I patched on the back with painters tape and yellow construction paper. My favorite part of the sign is how they put it on yellow. The sign is cardboard and measures 24 inches by 18 inches. I believe there are signs like this for each WS year with some years having more than one. |

They do have a cardboard example for each year the Orioles went to the World Series. I’ve seen a few variations over the years on the signs (not including the directional arrow). It would be cool to have at least one of the cardboard signs for each year (‘66, ‘69, ‘70, ‘71, ‘79 and ‘83). Also, would be nice for in my lifetime to see the O’s go to the World Series again. |

Day 32 – 1 February 2024
My next sign is similar to yesterday’s. It is made of cardboard and measures 24 inches by 18 inches. This sign celebrates the “City of Champions.” The city had a lot of success in the late 1960s and early 1970s with its professional sports teams including the Colts (NFL), Bullets (NBA), Clippers (Hockey 1962-1977) and of course the Orioles. These teams and their logos are included on the sign with the Oriole bird smack in the middle. The blue letters and orange background really look nice. I am not exactly sure what year this sign was produced celebrating the Champions of Baltimore but suspect the late 1960s or early 1970s. I am sure we’ll get some feedback. |

Day 33 – 2 February 2024
The next sign is from News American in 1979 celebrating 25 years of the Orioles. The sign is black with white and orange letters saying “It’s the…Orioles 25th Year.” It then says “Celebrate with News American” at the bottom. I imagine this was the face of their vending machine around the city dispensing their newspaper. The sign is made of cardboard and measures 16 inches by 9 inches. By the way, the Baltimore News-American newspaper was published in downtown Baltimore until May 27, 1986. It had a continuous lineage (in various forms) of more than 200 years. For much of the mid-20th century, it had the largest circulation in the city. |

Day 34 – 3 February 2024
Today’s sign celebrates the success of the 1983 Orioles. The sign measures 24 inches by 18 inches with a bright orange background and blue letters. The sign has the Oriole bird in the middle of the infield with a top message of “The Bird Flies” with “Memorial Stadium” at the bottom. The sign was used as a direction sign in Baltimore to get to the stadium. In small print at the bottom it has the Mayor’s name (William Donald Schaefer) and Citizens of Baltimore. |

Day 35 – 4 February 2024
My next sign is from Memorial Stadium and hung on the scoreboard while Brooks was playing 3rd base back in the 1970s. It would be displayed on the scoreboard. The sign is black with orange letters (BAL.) I have seen a “VIS.” Sign that would accompany it but could not get to it soon enough, sadly. The sign measures 17 inches by 9.5 inches and his made of heavy metal. It has a substance on it that I am allergic too, coincidentally. It is an amazing piece of “art” from the stadium. |

After a disastrous 1988 season there were a lot of new faces in Orioles camp the following spring & among those faces were two african american right handed pitchers by the identical name of Mike Smith. One hailed from Jackson, MS and the other from San Antonio, TX.
For identification purposes in Spring Training one was referred to as simply Mississippi Mike and the other as Texas Mike. To help aid the ID process, the Orioles placed a silhouette of their home state on the back of their jerseys. Neither pitcher made the club out of ST and were both sent to AAA Rochester. Mississippi Mike was eventually dealt to Pittsburgh in June and Texas Mike did get recalled from the Orioles the same month and pitched in 13 games. At Fan Fest in January 1990, Texas Mike was in attendance and while he was by that the time the only player in their system by that name, I did ask him if he would add the "Texas" moniker & while he didn't appear to be too thrilled about it, he did oblige. I was able to obtain Texas Mike Smith's '89 ST jersey recently and I thought most people here would like to see how unique it was (now I need to find Mississippi Mike's lol): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by roarfrom34; 02-04-2024 at 02:20 PM. |

piece of “art” from the stadium.
Day 36 – 5 February 2024 Today’s sign is one of my favorites and took a while to get it hung given its size. The Concession Directory is made of plastic and measures 48 inches by 23 inches. The vendor at Memorial Stadium providing the different services provided this sign around the stadium as a map for the different concessions and stadium services. The vendor at the time is ARA. I believe this sign is from the late 1980s and early 1990s, but can’t tell exactly. My research is incomplete. The sign shows upper and lower deck concessionaires (hot dogs, popcorn, crabcakes, nachos, fries, burgers, pizza, yogurt, and pretzels. Interestingly, I do not see any booze being sold (where is Naty Boh sold?). A few stickers are on the sign covering up old vendors saying “Beers of the World.” I have included a small area of the sign with stickers advertising the Gift Shop, Beers of the World, and Memorial Stadium Memories (anyone remember what Memorial Stadium Memories included?). The sign has great detail of the stadium sections and gates. At the bottom, you can find a directory for all the different services (first aide, tickets, security, playground {I don’t remember a playground}, fan assistance but no cell phone charging stations). |

Day 37 – 6 February 2024
My next sign celebrates the 1966 WS sweep / championship of the Baltimore Orioles. It features the iconic “Air Brooks” celebrating with McNally and Etch as they won their first championship in 1966. This sign marks the 20th anniversary of the Orioles first WS championship. At the top, it says “Spirit of 1966” and describes a celebration all week starting on July 13th about Oriole Magic. The sign is orange, cardboard and measures 17 inches by 11 inches. |

Today’s sign is from 1983 from News American celebrating Brooks Robinson. It was part of their newspaper vending machines advertising their Brooks special section feature (“A Salute to Brooks”) on Sunday July 31, 1983, which was the same day he entered the Hall of Fame with Juan Marichal, Walter Alston, and his friend, George Kell. The sign is mostly white with orange and a great picture of the greatest third baseman of all time. It measures 17 inches by 11 inches. |
