Webster, I'm lovin' your Voskamp's card of Wags! Ditto for all the other fantastic cards in this thread.
Being as I'm 99% NOT a set collector (except for the small Holland Creameries and A.W.H. Caramel sets), most of my collecting focus is on certain players, especially these three: Walter Johnson (to the extent my collecting budget will allow), Sam Rice (I'm striving for a master set), and Pete Runnels (my childhood favorite Washington Senator). Chosing a favorite from each of these 3 collections is tough, but here goes:
__________________
Seeking very scarce/rare cards for my Sam Rice master collection, e.g., E210 York Caramel Type 2 (upgrade), 1931 W502, W504 (upgrade), W572 sepia, W573, 1922 Haffner's Bread, 1922 Keating Candy, 1922 Witmor Candy Type 2 (vertical back), 1926 Sports Co. of Am. with ad & blank backs. Also 1917 Merchants Bakery & Weil Baking cards of WaJo. Also E222 cards of Lipe, Revelle & Ryan. |

This is the 1st ‘vintage’ and Mickey Mantle card I ever purchased, so has a lot of meaning. It consumes none of my time. I don’t worry about it or obsess about it, nor actively consider how to monetize it. I just simply enjoy it whenever I see it. And one day my kids can have it without debate or stress over selling it for a windfall.

![]() .. ..I have never seen another anything of his using this image/pose. Neat that Miss Frances kept this all those years . He was a good-looking heart-throb in 1936 , and polite enough to write a nice note. It's rare for me to not be on the constant prowl for "upgrades" of my lower-end cards but this is as good as it gets to my eyes. .. |

My Hero growing up.....he stumbled and floated like a gazelle at the same time in patrolling centerfield......The Mets won Game 3 of the 1969 World Series because of him - two great catches and a home run to lead off the game.....
An iconic image on the 1970 Topps card of the '69 Met fan favorite..........He hit a home run in my very first baseball game I attended as a kid......This card will always be my favorite..... ![]()

Hard choice between my Ruth and Gehrig. I bought a collection of 33/34 Goudeys from Orve Johansson in Largo FL while on vacation visiting my grandparents yearly. He claimed the collection came from 1930s pitcher Johnny Allen who lived in St Pete. This had to be somewhere between 1999-2001. I just started working and he trusted me to pay off the balance which I did. We had a great friendship which started in the early 1990s.
Ruth is a 1.5 vertical wrinkling

My favorite. Been collecting vintage for over 40 years and Ed Delahanty was always my favorite old timer. This cabinet is from 1898 and owned by the family. Address on back is the address of the Delahanty brothers tavern. Very proud to own it.

amazing stuff ITT -- my favorite card currently is my 1914 Cracker Jack Christy Mathewson. Was my first big purchase after getting back into baseball cards, and liked it so much I got Tim Carroll to do a piece on it.

For context, I only collected for a short time in my youth but it captured my imagination enough that I came back to it as an adult about 13 years ago. I really have two favorites. The first is the one premium card I remember having as a child.
![]() As I got back into collecting in 2010, one of the first places I landed was Dean's Cards and the prices there almost stopped my collecting journey before it started. Even considering I was starting with 1978 Topps. However, I found more reasonably priced sources and off I went. Over a decade later, the circumstances of my life have changed, and I've been able to afford cards that 2010 me couldn't have fathomed. So, this probably represents the high water mark of my collection, unless I can locate a signed Rogers Hornsby from the same set. ![]() |

One day I’ll buy a Ruth card from his playing days, but in the meantime, I’d have to say this Honus Wagner, because well, it’s a Wagner and nobody truly knows what the heck these were actually from. The mystery of the issue is cool to me.

In summer of 1987, with $30 worth of grass cutting $, I walked into a tiny card shop to try and buy one of holy grail cards of the area, a Don Mattingly RC. I looked in the case, found a nice Fleer for $32 and sitting next to it was this 1956 Campy for $30. I fell in love with the Campy card. As a 10 year old, I didn’t own anything pre 82 or so. The color and look of the Campy just hypnotized me, and much to the disappointment of my friends, I made the decision to pass on negotiating the Mattingly and made the Campy the centerpiece of my tiny collection. Still own this card and it was the gateway to the old stuff!
To the question below, yes I was able to find a nice Mattingly years later! Thanks, Bob Last edited by B O'Brien; 03-23-2024 at 03:02 PM. |
