I was going to make another thread, but I feel this fits well on this one, and I don't want to clutter the forum too much!

Really by chance I started to build a 52 Topps set. It started out passively in June of 2020. Mike going by Bocabirdman was running one of his many auctions, and I really admired the Bob Feller he had and decided I wanted to own it. I knew the lore behind the 52 Topps, really it's one of the first sets I feel like young collectors are introduced to, in the post-war era because of the iconic cards, and stories behind the high numbers and how Sy Berger supposedly dumped a bunch into the ocean. I'm going to blame Mike for starting me on this journey to eventual financial ruination, as I've decided one of my life long projects will be to finish this set,

That being said I started to pick up more cards over time, all of which I will eventually post on here in one big picture. I'm no where close to some of the people in this thread or on this forum but we all have to start somewhere. As for the point of this post, I'll stop beating around the bush. A few months ago, I made a post talking about how there were some certain cards I needed for the 52 set I'm working on. I started talking to a user Kevin or as he goes by 8thEastVB, he explained how his wife had inherited a collection, he was working on consigning it to an Auction House and he was new to the forum, but he'd be willing to sell me some cards.

We talked back and fourth, got to know each other pretty well. At one point due to truly horrendous weather, shipments were delayed, but that's just a part of life and something I totally understood. We made a deal for a few cards, they were packaged immaculately and I was very happy. One card that we kept talking about was Minnie Minoso. I was drawn to the card, but hesitant to pull the trigger. Roughly a month later, in March, I reached out to Kevin again, I wanted to buy some more cards, but I wasn't sure if he consigned them yet. Kevin assured me, he hadn't and be more than happy to sell me a few more cards. Minnie came up again, he was haunting me, I said to myself that I'd might kick myself down the road but at the time, I couldn't swing Minnie, so I purchased a few more cards, Duke Snider, Gil Hodges and Ted Kluszeswksi and went about my business.

A few days pass and my cards arrive. I take them out of the packaging and notice that for some reason, the Minnie was included! I thought this was some sort of mistake, I wanted to make sure I wasn't sent this by accident, because I didn't pay for Minnie. Kevin proceeded to send me this wonderful response:

"I added the Minnie as a gift. It wasn't going to have a big impact on what I presume will be a handful of lots of raw 52Topps. I've learned so much from reading Net54, and have received a ton of good advice that I wanted to try and pay it forward in some small way. I knew it was headed to a good home."


I was floored, and very thankful for Kevin and what he did. I meant to post this so many months ago, but life got in the way, and I figured what better time than to post it right now! It goes to show you there are still great people in this world. I'm looking forward to continuing this lifelong journey. All it takes is a single card sometimes. Minnie is below, and he says hello!

"Pistol Pete" (with apologies to Mr. Maravich)

Harold P. "Pete" Reiser. "Pistol Pete". Outfielder for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1940-1942 and 1946-1948 and for the Cleveland Indians in 1952. 786 hits and 58 home runs in 10 MLB seasons.

Reiser was a phenomenal talent cut down by injuries resulting from reckless play, including MLB-record 11 times taken off the field on a stretcher. 3-time All-Star. 1963 World Series champion. 1941 NL Batting champion. 2-time NL stolen base leader. His best season was 1941 for the Brooklyn Dodgers as he posted a .406 OBP with 117 runs scored in 601 plate appearances.

Excerpt from Reiser's SABR biography: As good as Pete Reiser had been in 1941, he was even better in 1942. Few who saw him in the season’s first half questioned whether he would repeat as batting champ. Some—including Reiser himself—thought he could follow up Ted Williams’s .406 campaign in 1941 with a .400 season of his own. Reese was having a fine year, too. Sportswriters were calling Pete and Pee Wee the Gold Dust Twins.

On July 18, 1942 the Dodgers had an eight game lead over the Cardinals when they went to St. Louis for a four game series. Reiser, batting .356, was riding an eleven-game hit streak. In the eleventh inning of a 6–6 tie on the July 19, Enos Slaughter belted a long drive off Johnny Allen. Reiser raced toward the center-field wall, narrowly avoiding the flagpole that rose from the playing field, and caught Slaughter’s hit in full stride—and then hit the concrete wall an instant later. The ball fell from his glove and, although dazed, he threw the ball to the cutoff man, Reese. By the time Reese fired the ball home, Slaughter had circled the bases to win the game.

All attention turned to number 27, who lay on the field motionless, facing the sky, his shoulder separated and blood trickling from his ears. When Durocher reached him, the manager started to cry. Pete was carried off on a stretcher and woke up the next morning in the hospital with a fractured skull and a brain injury. The Cardinals’ team doctor examined him and recommended that he not return to the field that season. In the era before the effects of a concussion were fully understood, Reiser did what gamers do—he returned to the diamond as soon as he could walk. He was dizzy, had a hard time focusing, and felt weak, but there was no keeping him out of the lineup.

He would never be the same player again.

When the H&S super set was sold I think Reiser was the sole missing GREY back. I seem to also recall a sale not too long back of a near set of grey backs missing only the Reiser as well. There are some prior threads in here about the apparent scarcity of that card

Donald R. "Don" Johnson. Pitcher for the Washington Senators in 1951-1952. 27 wins and 12 saves in 7 MLB seasons. He debuted with the New York Yankees in 1947 and 1950. His best season was 1954 with the Chicago White Sox as he posted an 8-7 record with an ERA of 3.13 in 144 innings pitched. He finished his career with the San Francisco Giants in 1958.

Excerpt from Johnson's SABR biography: Johnson spent a little over two years in the military, moving to the Army of Occupation in Japan. Discharged before the 1947 season and still only twenty-one-years old, he reported to Yankees spring training on a plane carrying celebrities Joe DiMaggio and Jack Dempsey, and another rookie, Yogi Berra, who was wearing Navy fatigues because “he didn’t have any other clothes.”

The upstart Johnson made the 1947 Yankees out of spring training. During the season he was befriended by DiMaggio, whom he called “the best player I ever saw in my life.” The six-foot-three, 200-pound Johnson made his Major League debut in the second game of a doubleheader on April 20, starting against the Philadelphia Athletics in Philadelphia. It was a memorable appearance; the Yankees won in ten innings, 3–2, and Johnson pitched all ten innings to earn the victory. “I was throwing good,” he remembered.

Six days later Johnson followed his debut with another complete-game victory, this time 3–1 over the Washington Senators. The good fortune did not last, however. On May 3 Johnson yielded six runs in just four innings while losing to the Chicago White Sox. After that, manager Bucky Harris used him sparingly, with mixed results. Following a June 29 win, he pitched only eight more times during the season and finished with a record of 4-3.

Johnson blamed his limited usage in the second half of the season on Charlie Dressen, one Harris’s coaches. “Charlie Dressen went and said, ‘Don, you’re lifting your leg too high.’ I said, ‘Stick it man! I’ve got four wins.’ I didn’t pitch much after that. If you talk back to some of these big shots, you don’t pitch anymore. That’s it.”

The H&S Super Set was 100% complete with a PSA 1 Reiser gray back.

1952 TOPPS Yogi......and company

My Daughter, Debbie, used to live on the same street in Montclair, NJ as the Berra family. When we would go for a walk in their neighborhood,
we would occasionally run into Yogi and Carmen. They were the most pleasant people that you would ever want to meet. Of course, we would
reminisce about the good ole days (1947 - 1958).
