A very affordable card. I've always liked the blue version over the red.

Another day, another tough choice. But since Kawika posted a Spider Baum Zeenut (I love Zeenuts with tabs) here is another Spider Baum Zeenut (1911, before tabs were on on the cards). I always thought Baum was just another guy but this thread prompted me to do some research. He was a career minor leaguer but since his career was so long, according to VCP he appeared in 18 different sets (all featuring PCL players). Any thoughts on whether that is a record for someone who never played in the majors?
He is actually HOFer Spider Baum (the Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame, that is) having won 267 in his 15 seasons in the league. More info can be found in the usual places (baseball-reference.com and Wikipedia). |

Nice Baum's. I collect PCL HOF'ers. I'm not sure why. I have no connection to the area but I just really find the early history of that league interesting. Here's one of my favorites:

Gandil played 9 MLB seasons, four with Washington and four with the Chicago White Sox. He was a good player for Washington, posting a .344 OBP with 91 stolen bases, while averaging more than 560 plate appearances per season. His four years in Chicago were significantly less productive, although he was the starting first baseman on the 1917 World Series championship team. In MLB history, however, he is forever remembered as a key member of the Chicago Black Sox. We find him here showcased as a Washington Senator.

Amazing card, I got it on my bucket list. Got to be one of the most tragic ends to any HOF's life.

Another tragic end. Robert Unglaub died in 1916 when a trains cargo box fell off and smashed him while he worked his side job. He was the player/ manager for the Fargo Graingrowers at the time.

It looks like there are names written in pen on two of the players - Harry Forbes and Charlie Forbes - could they possibly be brothers? I poked around on Google and came up with this: there was a Harold Alexander Forbes born in 1892 in New York state that had a sibling named Charles M. Forbes. From the looks of the photo, it appears to be circa 1910-1915. That would put Harry in the 18 to 23 year-old range, which seems to be about how old that individual is. I don't have a subscription to ancestry.com or genealogy.com, or else I would be able to research it further. Maybe someone else could pick up the torch? Hope this helps!

How about the guy up next? I wonder how many RBI's Gehrig would have had if he didn't follow Ruth n the lineup. Last edited by DeanH3; 03-09-2021 at 01:23 AM. Reason: spelling |
