I'm very happy finally be able to add this challenging 1939 1.5" variation of the Johnny Vander Meer pinback button to my collection.
It definitely has some foxing, but these are rare. I'll take it! Into the Vandy showcase it goes. ![]() ![]() Last edited by Scott Garner; 01-20-2020 at 02:17 PM. |

This item dates to 1870. It is a schedule of two tours of the Red Stockings in 1869 and 1870.

Both of those pins are tough, but the Vander Meer seldom shows up. Must of been a limited production.

Mike, if you own those Vandy and Reds pins, they are truly in AMAZING condition. Very nice! Mike, regarding the relative scarcity of the 1939 Vandy 1.5" pin: Just speculating here, but these were likely produced for the 1939 World Series. Despite Vandy's spectacular and storied 1938 season in which he tossed the back-to-back no-hitters, he struggled mightily during his 1939 sophomore season. So much so, that he was sent back to the minors to work on his mechanics. He played a very limited role with the 1939 ML Reds club & actually did not play in the WS. Perhaps the limited production was due to some/all of these factors, but I guess we will never know... Last edited by Scott Garner; 01-21-2020 at 05:38 AM. |

The link to my original photo perished in the Photobucket hostage situation a few years ago. I just found it on my hard drive and thought I'd post it again because it's a unique piece of Reds memorabilia:
redsshelf.jpg I gave a talk at the Newport, Kentucky (directly across the Ohio River from the Reds Stadium) library about early baseball in Northern Kentucky. A guy who I had previously met at one of my book signings came and gave me two pieces of Crosley Field as a gift - a brick and a piece of tile! The brick is self explanatory, but the tile is kind of interesting. I've had people tell me it was from A) main entrance and B) the bathroom I'm a big fan of the 1930's Reds and these two pieces now have an honored spot on one of the shelves in my studio, along side a Vander Meer signed ball. |

There's probably not a lot of memorabilia associated with the Reds' Red Lutz.
He spent the whole 1922 season with the Red, but he had only one at bat. He got a double, and his mlb career was over.

John, those are some eye-popping treasures.
![]() I do love my Big Red Machine collection, as I grew up with them and lived/died with every game. But yours is on a whole different level. Any rational person can see how stuff from the '60s would survive, but to see those ancient and important artifacts in that stellar condition is just beyond belief! I am particularly drawn to Reilly's RBI Award and Townley's Pin from 1869. How did they even survive, much less in that condition? The Reilly Award is stunning, and the 1869 Pin is something I never knew could exist. I have seen that incredibly early and ornate "C" logo (formed by a belt, ball and bat) but it has always been in print. To see a figural 3 dimensional representation of that is almost a religious experience. I think the Reds should relocate their Hall of Fame in your pad! ![]() Last edited by perezfan; 04-19-2020 at 09:49 PM. |

Here's a "snapshot" in time from the Reds first photo night which later became picture day. Does anyone know which team first started started doing this or was it the Reds in 58 and is it still practiced today? |

Maybe 5 yrs ago I picked up this seat - the person who refurbished a bunch of these seats provided pics of how they originally looked and the overall purchase of a ton of seats.
Crosley Field - I believe the Reds played there from the early 1900s to about 1970. I also recollect that this is the location of the first ML BB night game under lights? ![]()
