Wanted to see if anyone had an explanation for why a 1952 Topps # 134 Joe Tipton ( grey back ) would be in an auction with a starting bid of $75.00 and the card is beat! Writing on front , creases , etc.
![]() Not bidding on it but wow . Thanks for the input ,Brett |

There are several threads in this forum discussing why any 1952 gray back in the 131 to 190 series bring substantial premiums in virtually any condition. Scarcity and the desire of some collectors building master sets to complete that series in gray back drives high premiums for those cards. Similar to gray back cards in the 1 to 50 series in the 54

I kind of figured it had something to do with the grey back but was really surprised that in such bad condition it would start at such a high price.
Thanks for the replies , Brett |

PSA has only graded 27 gray backs, and there are 90 people attempting to complete the master set.

In nicer shape it would be $500-$750 or more. It's been bid from $75 up to $110 or so I think............tough card in any condition.

Pre sale estimate
Around $200 There are Lots of collectors working on "not your ordinary " 1952 set. Before Ebay it would have been just about impossible to complete a gray back run, that's if you'd even heard of them, or noticed an oddity in your pile of cards. The fight for high grades ones rarely ends in fruition, and collectors are picking up the pace on the low grade copies.

Pretty cheap in my opinion.
There was a time when every grey back no matter condition sold over $300. Of course, more have been found and graded since then. Cheers, Patrick
